Yes 17s are better....but MT SS on 20" is still better than 555r, as stated you may just not notice that difference until converter and power are added.

I'd have to disagree here. When I had my 20" 555r's with just basic bolt on's, a friend of mine had same mods with 20" MT ET S/S. I ran 1/10th faster because he weighed 100lbs more than I do.

After I put my Circle D 3200 TC in, I couldn't hook at all, so I got some Corvette 18" replicas and MT ET Street R. Even after a 125 shot and a 3.91 gear I still hook fine as long as prep is decent.

Shortly after I did the TC, he added the exact same TC, and his MT ET S/S 20" wouldn't hook either. He went to a 17" with Hoosier DR's and then was able to hook.

ZZ430, the trainwreck was me, driver error. I got up to the line and pre-staged normal, revved it up to 1000-1500rpms, couldn't keep it at a consistent rpm, bumped in short/long hops, got staged, and it jumped forward again so now deep-staged, got confused, caught a terrible light and worst 60' ever for some reason and bad E.T. It was pretty comical actually. I was laughing at myself at the end of the track. Obviously it would take some practice, at least for me!!!

Basic boltons 3200 stall ..391gears with Nitto 555r 20 inch drag radials give me a 1.8 sixty ft if I foot brake to 1200 rpm. I'm going to leave off idle this year and drop the psi a bit. The Nittos hook ok...but do spin when I foot brake it.

With your same mods (minus the gear) in 977 D/A, on good prep, I ran a 1.70--60' with MT ET Street R on Corvette 18" replicas.

I did a pass last fall with the 3.91, without the nitrous, and the car ran a tenth/plus quicker than my prior best of 7.84--1/8th mile, but I lost the slip so I couldn't post it to move up on the 1/8th mile bolt on list.
I was consistently getting 1.4X--60' on the juice, and was so exited about that, I lost the non-juice slip.

I have some 17" skinny fronts to run this coming fall, so hope to do a little better than that.

After you put the 555R's through their paces, I'd highly recommend the MT ET Street R on a 17" or 18" wheel. With your mods, and good prep, you'll be able to launch as hard as you want and hook. On really good prep you should be able to run 22-23 psi.

My 60' is always best flashing the converter off the line. Tried footbraking at many different RPM's, best was a 10th slower 60' vs. flashing.

Thanks Joe....i will see how it dies flashing the converter....I haven't tried that at all...mostly foot braking and launching at different rpms.

So, the OP has a torque converter? If so, my mistake...but if not, my comments hold true unless we are racing on unprepped crappy surfaces, including your scenario of apples to oranges.

My 20" MT Street S/S hooked all I had with only headers and cai......they also hooked 1.6x once I was boosted.

Good alignment, decent track prep and being able to see/hit the groove matters.

OP...glad the averages got better, sounds like you are in the right track and we just need some experience brake stalling and as always more powa!

Considering a 2 step?

We all agree more sidewall is better.

The OP never stated he had a TC, You had stated the benefit of the 20" M/T S/S vs. 20" 555R would be better seen after adding a TC, or boost.

What scenario of apples to oranges did I post?
My friend at the dragstrip I go to had the EXACT same mods as I did (basic bolt on's….Cold Air, Headers, Exhaust, PTB, UDP, and Tune) and after I added a TC, my 20" 555r's wouldn't hook.
He added the same TC....Circle D 3200 PS, and his 20" M/T S/S wouldn't hook either.

He got no benefit with the 20" M/T S/S versus my 555R's, both cars have the EXACT same mods.
That is the comparison I made, an EXACT apples to apples comparison of MT S/S, versus 555R's, when adding a TC on top of the same basic bolt on's.

The 20" MT S/S would do better with some boost vs. the 20" 555R's for sure, but with a TC it doesn't make any difference, neither of them will hook.
More sidewall is needed than a 20" has.

The OP has seen no improvement with the MT S/S vs. the Nitto 555R, and with his current mods, he won't, only improvements will come from better launches, better D/A, better prep, both tires will perform the same with basic bolt on's.
