Removing resonator

I have a 2010 SS automatic. Can I have the resonators cut out and replaced with pipes welded in and still retain the h-pipe portion? My muffler shop is really good at this stuff. I'm just confused, when I looked at pics online, it looks like this big resonator box engulfs the factory H-Pipe as well. I'm hoping to just have the resonator area/box cut out and then having piping welded in while retaining the h-pipe portion.

What is your end goal? The l99 resonator is big and as your said. ...incorporates a versionof an h pipe inside. You need a cross over of some type so your exhaust flows better.

The resonators help to remove the odd drone caused by the AFM. If you are keeping the AFM you might want to keep the resonator. I say remove AFM and put in any exhaust you like. Also remove the AFM lifters. While you are in there put in a better cam. And install some LT headers and get a tune. I forget what the question was...

Just search on AFM and drone:

This thread shows what's inside the resonator. No actual h-pipe inside. You would be better off to replace it with an x pipe as long as you have afm tuned out.

Magnaflow X Pipe

I removed the stock resonator and replaced it with a Magnaflow X pipe, I run long tube headers and hi flow cats, the rest of the exhaust is stock. I did not want it too loud.

You can get a x pipe to go in there from summit or jegs for under 200

I thought it might save a little weight and flow better if I could cut it out and have a couple pipes welded in. I didn't think about the AFM or drone etc...No biggie, still learnin. I'm having L.Ts with cats installed in 1.5 weeks, can't wait for that. Currently have outlaw axle backs.

If your doing long tubes you’ll want a tune anyway. Might as well disable AFM at the same time and pick up a mid pipe from jegs

Some are going with the double helix(2 x-pipes in series) like Borla has I believe. An intriguing idea and with your muffler man should be a straight forward install. Looks like the scavenging affect could be just the ticket...no idea on how it sounds.

good luck!

Peace

What magnaflow resonated X pipe does everyone use?

Does this have more noise over stock resonators?

Magnaflow 11386 is the 2.5" muffler with an x pipe inside. I would think it would be louder than stock, even with the rest of the exhaust untouched? If you have an L99 the rear mufflers are quieter than the LS3 mufflers so you still have to overcome that.

I have a Range device I turn on each time I drive to defeat AFM.
How do you do it with the paddles?
