ZL1 Questions
Hey Guys! So here is the current mods.
-Upper -Lingenfelter lower -Rotofab intake -Kooks Headers -MSD plug wires -ARP head bolts -Cam -Unknown Injector -Ported Heads -Magnaflow Exhuast -High flow cats -Currently has 22 degrees of timing. PE is set to 11s. -Vehicle is cammed but has factory idle timing. ( not a huge deal, but it is audibly unstable on idle just ever so slightly. -LTFTs are turned off and saw up to 16% corrections in the short terms. -Maximum knock retard tables are zeroed out -Spar Plugs about 27 on gap -Leans out past 6k -noticed black smoke out of the exhaust while it was on the dyno - Vehicle is trying to knock retard but is limited to 3-4 degrees. Im wondering what will cause this to lean out at 6k? need a bigger pump? I can not for the life of me find out what size injector are but on this thing. Its A6 by the way. I get a little sputter when around 2200 RPM in each gear besides first...what could cause this? Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated...Dyno attached to this thread. Are there any other changes yall would make? |

What duty cycle are your injectors at? Your fuel pump could be maxed out as well. I would recommend upgrading your fuel pump at that power level if its still stock.
Black smoke means your running rich but at 11:1 afr that sounds right. |

Not sure which plugs you are running but if they are the NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs TR7IX, those are gapped at .40. At .27 the plug would never get hot enough to burn the full in the cylinder..

I agree, but a lot of people run them at .030 and below.

0.027 is a really tight gap for a TR8IX. That's one heat range colder than most of us run. You can certainly run it if you have a ton of cylinder pressure (what pulleys and which cam? How much boost?) I'd gap it out to at least 0.033-0.035 if it were me. I'm at 0.039" with 7ix's at 12.5-13psi, and was at 0.039" at 15 psi before the cam, too, FWIW.

So sorry! I meant when you are under WOT, full boost, how much heat and pressure are you cramming into those cylinders? Measurement not required- just boost level and pulley combo would give us a good idea. If you're under 15 psi, I'd run the 7-range. I'd only personally consider the 8-range if you are higher than that. With a BTR-3, unless you're running a crazy pulley ratio, you don't really need the 8's. Just based on the 22 degrees of timing and knock retard, I'd say you are squarely in the 7ix zone. You can run the 8's though- some people do. I'd just gap it out more to try to get the spark a little hotter if you keep using them. A bigger gap on the 8's or a change to 7's could also help with idle quality, in my opinion (though a BTR-3 shouldn't pose a ton of idle issues).
Of course all of this is just one guy's opinion, so take it with a grain of salt!

Unknown injector? Did you pick up this car used? I see nothing mentioned about the fuel system ... there is no way you are going to maintain fuel pressure on stock pump w/o a booster with those mods and you should have at least id850s in there... my stock inj were running wide open with a 5% pulley
You need to get a good tune in that veh, you say its knocking but limited to 3-4 degrees, what if it needs more to keep the car safe... There is a lot that needs addressed... hope you get it figured out ! Good luck Like others have said, you def dont need 8s |

Sent you a
PM Rob, Crash, There are not marking on the injectors, they were but in by the previous owner, they are not stock that is the only thing i know for sure about them...Id like to test the duty cycle for sure before go drop a grand on some id1050's..at which point i would need a dual fuel pump im guessing. |
