I plan on getting a blank and have it cut to my code, and keep that key in my wallet. The key alone won't start your vehicle, but it will open the door, say if your keys are locked inside.
I must say that is a great idea .

since we're talking keys....if you have to take the battery out to change it....will you have to re-program it?

Seems like a pre-cut one like those on Ebay would make a more realisstc looking model for "photography" than a blank one. People would know the blank one was not a real key if they saw it in pictures.

Inquiring (or nosey) minds want to know..................why are you photographing the Camaro key??

Maybe a local member can lend you one for a shoot, if you make a thread asking........ "Can anyone around (insert town here), lend me a key for the day".

I am sure if they are permitted to sit in on the shoot, you will have no problem getting a key!

The fobs you see on ebay, the keys have already been cut, and will be useless in your vehicle..You have to get a new key blank, have it cut and then placed in the fob and have it reprogrammed. The blanks SHOULD be available at a large locksmith shops soon, as far as I know they are not yet available to locksmiths, and not all locksmiths will be carrying them because it takes a special key cutting machine to cut them, and is VERY expensive. The dealers like it that way for obvious reason. Each key has a code, the code series for the Camaro and other systems is
Z0001-Z6000 and your camaro has a key code somewhere inbetween those two numbers, usually you will find this on your keyring(aluminum tab with number)when you purchase a new vehicle, sometimes its a little punch out piece. or the dealer can look up the code from your VIN#, , keep this number if you should ever loose your key or need to have one duplicated. I plan on getting a blank and have it cut to my code, and keep that key in my wallet. The key alone won't start your vehicle, but it will open the door, say if your keys are locked inside. Hope this helps everyone out...enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Maybe this should be a "sticky" in the FAQ section.

The Service Manager at my local dealership (also a family friend) told me that they're cheap like $60 a piece and some guy with a 2SS/RS with the GFX just lost both of his somehow and they were cheap to replace.

The reason you can't get one is because they are laser cut and shipped out and the dealer can't cut them so you'd have to get one precut.

Thats BS... I got a replacement key for my Camaro (2010 1SS) for $55 from my dealership.... Took about 5 days for the key to come in and 10 minutes for them to program it to my car...

Onstar yes , they will open it for you..where's your onstar number to call, probably in you glove box..locked up! They will not be able to open it in real remote places where there is no signal either,ie: mountains..or if you park in a concrete parking garage! Individual key blanks are now available thru big time locksmiths,,,the keys are not laser cut , but are milled with a router type machine...which is very expensive and most dealers won't by one with an $8,000 price tag. The blades are removed by knocking out the pin at the end of the key blank. The ones sold on ebay that say..key has been pre-cut ..yes it has...but not for your vechicle...there are 1000's of possibilities, its probably one that someone miss-cut..just buy a new blade and have it recut to your particular code or duplicated from your other key Then have the key fob programed YOu can program your own key in about 2 minutes...want to know how...just ask me mjstroh Locksmith

I appreciate all the insider lock-smith info....

But, I programmed On-star into my cell phone and my wifes cell phone. If, heaven forbid, I lock my keys and cell in the car, I simply find a phone... call my wife and she contacts on-star... She also has the information, security question/answer so it's all good...I call her instead of On-star cause all my on-star stuff is IN THE CAR.....though now that I think about it, I could put it on a card and carry it in my walet... though then I would have to wear a foil hat on my a$$ to keep it from getting scanned by a mustang driver and having my camaro sodomized...ooops sorry...
