Well, it didn't grenade because I caught it soon enough. Engine is apart, scoring on cam along with a couple lifters being out of spec/having scoring. I think this is something that isn't common and shouldn't worry most people. Just keep an ear out for the sound. I do think that it is something that would come up with the design of the engine. I would make the assumption that some of the Challenger/Charger engines might have the same issue.

I started to make a comment yesterday about possible lifter issue and I only say this because when running 15/50 I noticed on cold starts I had a louder than normal lifter knock on the right Bank or passenger side . once warmed up it went away after I finally realized maybe it could be an issue with the lifter not being able to hydraulically operate properly with the cold 15 50 oil I dropped the oil put 5 W 30 lifter noise gone . now I don't know if your issue had anything to do with 15 50 oil or not but I believe there is a hydraulic issue between the 15 50 oil and our hydraulic lifters on cold startup surely the guys at General Motors knew what they were doing when they recommended using 15 50 for track because everybody has to cold start their vehicle before they track correct? 1970 Judge can verify the conversation we had last time we met that I was describing to him that issue about the cold startup. Whether or not I have a scored cam lobe or not I'll only know if they find any medals in the oil sample that I had pulled

Just wanted to add; I had a broken valve spring at 94K miles. Did not drop the valve. Replaced all 16 springs. Valves were within spec. My valve tick is louder if I use Mobil1. If I use royal purple MUCH quieter. I had a 2008 Z06 before this car with a Katech Torquer cam. Had the same loud tick with Mobil1 but not with royal purple. 108K on the car now and on the factory brake pads. No track days.

Use of M1 is what 21st Century attributed to 12 of my 16 rockers and pushrods being damaged when they did their 650hp package earlier this month. I'll never use M1 again after that.

"Delaminated cam coating causing excessive pushrod wear." They replaced cam, lifters, and pushrods. Not sure if one lead to the other. Car is quiet now so it seems to have been corrected. I forgot the paperwork at home so I am going off memory.

Anytime you have someone touch your engine, you should use your shops recommended break-in oil and procedure, that way the onus is on them to fix it if their recommended break-in procedure chunders the engine work. That's the value of having your engine work done in a shop, and having a relationship with your engine builder and not just buying parts.

Sent my heads in to AHP as a core so I wouldn’t have my car down for too long. Just got wiggle test results back on mine.

Completely stock other than kooks long tubes. Stock cam.

“More than a few guides at .015.”

Lucky my engine didn’t eat itself on my way down to Miami before I pulled the heads.

So if there was any question on whether or not the LS7 heads were fixed on the z/28...

Just get the heads done, pretty reasonable price wise whether you do it or a shop does
