A little update on the Chevelle........Since completion in May of 2014, we have driven it on two Power Tours (Long Haul).....Did the Goodguys Hall of Fame Road Tour this year, and put on 14,240 miles in total ...........Along the way, after getting the brake issue corrected, the only other issues were a flat tire,....... a broken tail pipe hanger,......and a slight problem with the plug on the Throttle Position Sensor caused by condensation while cleaning the engine at a quarter car wash (since sealed up and corrected)..........LOL.......These LS engines are the best thing since sliced bread !!!..........But....with all Good things there is an end.........Had to pull the car into the garage and do some Heavy Maintenance to it........Changed the Oil and Filter.........Sheesh !!!!.........And .....after driving the Chevelle for a year and a half.......a new standard for "Drivable" torque has been established.........so.......The Impala will be upgraded and the "New" project will be starting shortly after the Impala is finished...........Stay Tuned.........I found the purse........LOL........

Absolutely incredible build and exactly the way I would have done it, matching numbers be Damned! My first car, at 16 was a '66 L78, m21m, 4:10 geared triple black chevelle that I purchased for $2800 from the original owner in '75. I had a blast with that car. I got sidetracked in the late '70's and spent a decade or so in the car show, trailer queen, numbers matching game specializing in '69 - '70 mustangs.
I could not agree more with your statement that driving a car is much more rewarding than owning a car. I owned a '69 Boss 429 mustang for years until a local collector called my ex during Superbowl XXXIX in 2005 offering to buy my car. She drove a hard bargain even though she knew I had veto power. I had never considered selling but we were talking a good chunk of change. When I reflected on it I realized that owning that car was not a lot of fun, I was paranoid every time it left it's climate controlled home. I decided to sell and have never regretted it. I'm retiring next year and doing a build almost identical to yours is on my bucket list. I can't believe someone has done a build almost identical to what I have long dreamed of. I have a soft spot for 66 - 67 chevelle due to my personal history and, despite the fact that my 66 was black, marina blue has always been my favorite color. Kudos to you sir for an outstanding job. If I do get around to doing a similar build, your build journal will be an invaluable resource.

Such a cool build. Wish I still had my '66 Malibu 300 Deluxe(post car) to build again. One of my favorite over all the 150+ cars I've had. Hard to come by those anymore.
Again simply beautiful car you've got!

I just read through this build and...man, that is one awesome car!
I think the whole "numbers matching" thing is a tricky topic. 1966 saw 66,843 SS 396 Chevelle's produced. If this car was optioned the same as 40,000 other cars (besides paint and interior, what else was there?), I don't see why it's such a big deal. In fact, only the 2-door Malibu had more cars (130,540) built that year than there were Super Sports so, rare it was not. So, unless he managed to find some rare 1-out-of-10 combo and tore that apart, let it be. This car is awesome, he put some incredibly thoughtful work into it, and it's now a really cool driver.
