This is for Z28, LS7, 7.0 V8, Fluid specs and capacity.

I thought I add this info for all you DIY guys like me. When it comes to fluid I usually change it before recommended intervals. Z28 being a special car, it needs special care. Not only that, Z28 being a performance car, most people will drive it harder than say Toyota Camry.

Below is a list of what is recommended so don't shoot the messenger, and if you put your own favorite snake oil for your Z28 then list it and put a part number so we buy it without confusion. Thanks for your input.

This is for Z28, LS7, 7.0 V8, Fluid specs and capacity.

Engine oil: Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic motor oil for normal use, and 15W-50 for competitive and performance driving events, 10 qt.

Engine oil Filter: GM Part No. 12626224, AC Delco UPF-48R, and competitive driving oil filter AC Delco PF64

Engine Coolant: Dex-Cool only, 12.7 qt

Hydraulic Brake System: DOT 3 GM Part No. 19299818

Hydraulic Power Steering: DOT 3 GM Part No. 89020661 (Except Z/28, electric power steering)

Manual Transmission: GM Part No. 88861800, 4.5 qt.

Rear Axle: 75w-90 GM Part No. 88900401, 1 qt.

Air Filter Stock GM Part No. 23164564, AC Delco A3194C

Passenger Compartment Air Filter GM Part No. 92234714, AC Delco CF-178

Spark Plugs GM Part No. 12571165 AC Delco 41-104, Plug Gap .95-1.10 mm (.037-.043 in)

This guys posted a thread about changing fluids with 5000 miles on his Camaro, forgot if it was a SS or Z28. Anyways long story short....Changed out motor oil, trans fluid, and rear diff fluid and posted before and after pictures with only 5000 miles and it was like WTF! After seeing that I'm going to change my fluid often by per miles or by date. I'll look for it and post it here so you can see the before and after pictures.

You missed the track day / competitive driving oil filter AC Delco PF64 when using Mobil 1, 15W50 oil.

Great info.

Do you have the time intervals to change the different fluids?

My car has heads and cam done. Previous owner recommends using Valvoline 10w-30 full synthetic racing oil. Every 3000 miles or 3 months, whatever comes first.

Jon, little harsh there...Anyways this info is coming from GM Tech. I've been bugging and bugging them about some fluid recommendations.

Jon, you are correct. I was actually thinking about that when I was typing this up. This information is for new Z28 owner like myself so they have some basic guide what fluid to use.

Not harsh at all. Not your fault. You actually went to a GM source and were given incomplete data... so objectively, yes... unreliable source

I'll have to look though, didn't I provide you the track prep document before? Tells you the fluids to use.

Here's the document:

I do my motor oil every 5000 miles. I'll do my trans and diff every 5000 miles and coolant and brake fluid every 10,000. Motor, trans, and diff more often since they get the most abused when driving.

I'm still looking for a post somewhere here and he posted a picture before and after fluid on motor, diff, and trans. After seeing that, I'm going to change it every 5000. Now, when you track you should change it every time after that's what most are saying.

So far this is what I'm using:
Engine: Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic motor oil
Trans: Red Line D4 ATF SKU: 30504
Diff: Red Line 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil SKU: 57904

Please let me know if these snake oil is good enough for regular weekend driving for my Z/28. Dang, cars now these days are so technical. Back in the days I used the cheapest Motor oil, ATF, & diff gear oil with no problem. Now these days there are so dang many different kind and color, it can drive you crazy thinking about it.

Ok my Z is now at 10,000 miles. Friday night, my family got nothing going on so I decided to work on trans and diff fluid. In the box 1 qt of red line GL5 gear oil, 5 qt of red line D4, and some cold shiner (after I’m done of course).

Jacked up all 4 corners, changed out diff fluid, changed out trans fluid, and took it for a ride and man I got to tell you it was smooth. In the past used AC Delco but this was the first time using red line and I can feel and hear the difference. No wonder a lot of people are talking about red line. This stuff is great.

On the side note, trans and the diff fluid was really really dirty. After seeing the how dirty it was, I wouldn’t follow the GM maintenance schedule. I would change it at least every 10,000 miles on those two areas. Oil every 5000, trans and diff at least 10,000 (best at 5000), brake fluid at least 10,000, coolant at least 10,000 or 5 years. My next project is brake and coolant.

Happy Friday 13th. I’m going to have some cold ones now.
