The gauge is only accurate sitting in coolant. Think about what happens in an overheat, air pocket, or loss of coolant. The sensor sitting there at the top of #1 cyl in the head is no longer in coolant. It's reading can drop, fooling the person watching the gauge to think the engine is not screaming hot overheating. The computer is watching for a certain engine temp rise rate. Outside the norm, set a warning for the cooling system to be checked. If one just relied on the gauge and there was a low coolant condition they could melt the engine down before the coolant temp gauge ever showed a problem. |

I've had the Mishimoto 169 degree thermostat in for about 50k miles, no problems. Did you check your coolant level in the radiator and overflow tank?

While driving today I turned the dic to coolant temp to observe the temperature. It stayed at 163 for about 10 minutes then finally reached 169 then dropped to 167 and eventually got up to 172. This took around 15 minutes. I didn't get the a/c off warning today.

Maybe I have been out of the cold for too long. What kind of coolant you running? Makes me wonder if your stat is stuck open.

Never had this issue, and I've seen a coldest of 173 in the dead of winter.

Yea, sounds stuck open. I would replace it, it's easy enough.
