Help - car idling too fast after vmax tb install.

Hey guys, need a little help here. I installed a brand new vmax throttle body and after the install the car is idling at 1300 rpm. I've checked the maf sensor and I checked for any air leaks. Any thoughts here?

O-ring was good. I've got a good seal.

So after fidling with the connectors, maf... trying a variety of different troubleshooting options, including disconnecting the battery... retuning it with my Diablo Intune (idle control)... nothing. Still a high 1300rpm idle. I've determined that its a faulty tb. Maybe over-ported.

I put the BBK back on after a good thorough cleaning and then no more issues.

Ah well, better luck next time.

If it would idle properly...

I just rev'ed the engine a couple of times and what I did notice was that the rpm gauge didn't fall after letting off the gas as fast as the BBK. it just smoothly rev'ed slower and slower instead of a more steep fall from the BBK. Sounded really nice... but then it just fell back to 1300rpm idle and I just couldn't put it on the road like that.

Still want one, just going to have to return this one.

The bright side in all of this is that I cleaned the BBK tb real nice, which did have a build up on it, and I cleaned the Vararam air filter too while I was at it.

So your ditching a BBK which was notorious for causing problems for a vmax and have unusually high idle, it may be a bad throttle body but hey you have been using a BBK not stock and that cost more than the $150 to port a stocker to vmax with core so whats up with that?

Mine did the exact same thing when i installed the VMAX tb yesterday. At first startup after the installatioin, it idled high around 1500 rpms then came down and settled at around 900rpms (still high). I then took it for a drive to see if that would change anything and it was no better. It would hang around 2000 rpms if the car was moving (with the transmission in neutral or in gear) without being on the gas at all. If i pressed the clutch pedal in while the car was coasting around 20 MPH, the idle would come back down to about 700 rpms and if i released the clutch pedal it would rise back to ~2000 rpms again (so as long as the car was still moving in gear or coasting in neutral.) If the car was completely stopped (like at a red light), the idle would come down to normal in about 10 seconds to about 550ish rpms. At first i though i diconnected a vacuum hose or something else was causing a vacuum leak. I even reflashed back to the factory tune and that didnt change anything. Reflashed the custome tune again and still the same thing. I tried doing the manual idle relearn and it didnt work either. Then i took the car out for a drive for about 45 minutes. Idle remained the same (incorrect rpm). So then i found and open road near my house thats lonely (and that i use to "test" out my cars) and did a full throttle 1/4 mile pass shifting at 6200rpms. No pinging. Car felt and pulled strong as always, but when i let it coast, the idle remained high. So i gave up on the manual idle relearn. As a last resort i did the 5 20 fuse pull when i got back home last night and left it like that over night. Fired it up this morning and drove 300 feetr down my block and still the same.

Took it to my chevy dealer early at 7am. I explained the story and symptoms to my service writer thats handled me for the last 10 years (Her name is Griselda BTW. Outstanding service thoughout the years. Been working with her since she was at Sopp Chevrolet where i bought my new tahoe in 2005 and new camaro in 2009) and before i was able to finish telling her the symptoms she said "your car needs to relearn the idle ". So i said "YES! Thats what i think too" Said her Tech2 always shows up ealry for his 8am shift and that she'd get me through quickly so i can make it to work this morning. Car went in at was out 20 minuites later. Problem solved. Idles perfectly just like before trhe VMAX installation. Will take it to my "test" road to datalog it and see what she does tomorrow. But as of now, the car is idling perfect with the VMAX ported tb.

Interesting. Spec, did you ever try another ported TB again or just say screw it?

The more aggressive the port the more likely the need for a retune will be. Even mild ports have a small chance of needing some calibration depending on how far off the calibration is from TB to TB.

Interesting... didn't catch this the first time.

I didn't have to go through any of that when I installed the BBK. It just started up and settled to idle nicely.

Gunmetal Speedster, to this day I still have that BBK. No issues, excep the recent P0121 hidden in the ECU that simply turned out to be a dirty TB.

I still wonder if only a handful of BBK's were actually bad... a bad lot or something that had people spread the word about how bad they are.

This one's been great and still doing its thing nicely years later.

I am having the same issue with high idle, but I have done nothing with the throttle body or anything else with the car. It just started doing it a month or so ago.
Can the TB get out of adjustment for no reason and require a relearn?
BTW, my car is highly modified but no additional mods when the idle started acting up.
