CA out-of-state ordering; Dealers/ GM Help?

My boyfriend last night made a good point about me picking up the Camaro out-of-state. CA is different with their emissions laws than the other 49 states. So much so that there are two categories of vehicles made for the US-- 49-state emission standard (NOT legal to own in CA with less than 7500 miles on it, unable to register in CA EVER), and 50-state emission standard, which meets CA's guidelines and is fine.

Now, I know it's possible to get a new car and register it in CA from one of the other 49 states as my sister leased her new Cobalt in MI, drove it about 2500 miles home to CA, and registered it here. It was still considered a new car by CA when she got it here as it had less than 7500 miles on it, but my question is; (specifically to the non-CA dealers on this site, and GM if anyone from there can help me)-- would it be possible for me to order my Camaro to your dealership out of state and still be able to register it in CA? I mean, would I be able to order a 50-state emission standard Camaro from you and pick it up at your dealership? Or would it then HAVE to be delivered to a dealership here?

Interesting puzzle and I'm curious because the more I think about it, the more picking it up out of state as an excuse to visit my family in MI and have a really nice drive to break it in on the way back sounds like what I want to do.

Besides; as CamaroScotty noted in another thread, CA is so far one of the hardest places to find a dealer willing to sell at MSRP or below... I will be emailing my local dealers today for info too; just to add to the list but I don't really remain hopeful based on what I've heard so far.

Scotty may be able to say for sure, but the CA emissions (same for some other states too) are on option you order like anything else. I can't see why you couldn't do that as long as you order. A car on a lot would be different because dealers elsewhere would likely not have CA car on the lot....

Actually I don't think there has been a difference between a regular car and a California car for some time. They all meet California requirements now. No reason to have two different setups.

It shows a separate $0 dollar option for the Vette if you order one:

http://www.chevrolet.com/byo/selectO...=yes&x=31&y=10

EMISSIONS OVERRIDE CA/CT/MA/NY/PA/RI Emissions override, , California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania or Rhode Island, (for vehicles ordered by dealers in the states of California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania or Rhode Island with Federal emissions) (NB8)

But to your point, it is not clear what difference it makes, but it is definitely an option. Same thing for a Cobalt, so there is something different on CA cars.....

The CA DMV still displays the info on their site for new cars, so there's definitely a difference. This happened to a friend of mine with an '07 Dodge Ram; they wouldn't let her register it in-state, ever, and they have the VIN on file so it CAN'T ever be registered here.

But thanks for the reply and the info, I'd still like to hear officially from a dealer or GM but it's good to know that it's an order-able option.

you're fine with a 50 state emission exhaust, regardless where it's bought.

And the exhaust option can be ordered several different ways.

Here's the 2009 Vette exhaust options:

FE9 Emissions, Federal requirements $0.00

NE1 Emissions, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington state requirements $0.00

YF5 Emissions, California state requirements $0.00

Scotch, I might have found a dealer or two up here in NorCal that will give me fleet pricing/group buy discount as well as selling at MSRP. Still discusssing terms, but I will let you know if it happens and see if you want in.

When you find out if you are getting one, go sign up in my thread about it "Labelled SF bay area people who are getting a camaro for sure" or something like that. I have a list of a few people who are going to get one for sure so I can let the dealer know I have X amount of buyers who will guarantee buying one.
