Stupid question yay should i get ls3 if i dont know how to drive manual yet - Page 2 - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

I've been driving manual for about 19 years. 6 years of that was working as a Valet. I had been driving and owned a stick before I took the Valet job. I was very nervous about driving other peoples stick drives. Never had an incident. Well not because of a stick at least. It's all about the clutch, and getting going. Do that a couple times and you'll gain confidnece. Once you gain confidence, you'll start figuring it all out. It will come to you. Once it does, you'll never look back. We'll maybe a few times at a stop sign at the top of a hill, but you know what I mean. The way you described it, it sounds like your step-father wants to help. Take him up on it. If you learn stick before you get the Camaro, you will be that much more excited about getting it, and enjoy it that much more too. Let us know when you say to yourself, "I'm glad I got a stick."

As long as you're not a brand new driver, you will be fine. New drivers need no additional stresses, like worrying about what they doing with the shifter/clutch.

Practice first in a big parking lot, and get some confidence before you get on the road. Nothing will fluster you faster than "killing" the engine in the left turn lane while other drivers are honking away!

Just my 2 cents. Been driving manuals for 37 years.

Absolutely get the manual. Not sure if you are an experienced driver, but I required my kids all to learn to drive a stick. My youngest (16 yr old daughter) now has confidence and no problem driving a stick. She, like everyone else was nervious on hills, intersections, etc. Practice in a mall parking lot or a school parking lot (make sure you can find reverse too - most car models are differnt). As suggested by several replies above, the clutch is key, once you get the feel it will become easy fairly quickly. Yes, you will stall, yes you'll apply too much gas or not release the clutch evenly (everyone does this) - but there is nothing like driving a stick.

Why spend $40k on a muscle car without an M6? Unless you have a physical reason and are unable to shift, get the M6. Well worth it. Otherwise everyone will be asking you why you got an automatic.

Get what you want but don't listen to the crap some will say about the stick being alot more fun that an automatic, that is just a stupid blanket statement.If you want a stick and don't feel it makes you some sort of superior god because you drive a stick the get one. If you want a stick and need it to look cool to your friends, get one. If you want to just go cruise and enjoy yourself and don't need the stick to feel like a man, get an auto. The cool factor will be dead after you stall the car in front of a car full of girls anyway. And yes I can drive a stick, have owned many cars with them and have driven probably thousands of cars with them. I even own a 67 Camaro with one, and my 2010 A6 is much more a pleasure to drive.

I'd get whatever you feel the most comfortable with, or feel you'll enjoy more.

Me? I really don't have to be doing anything with my left foot to feel like I'm driving, and the qualities I possess that make me more of a man than others are evident no matter what kind of car I'm behind the wheel of, so it makes little difference to me.*nods*
