L99 dod help please
Hello all, I recently purchased a 2011 ss with the L99. The car has 100k miles
On it and was babied. I drive it with a miss fire in cylinder 7 for about 5 months. Nothing bad but would shake a little under acceleration and would Throw the stabilitrak light and another light on. I decided to throw a cam in there with all new lifters, dod and vvt delete. I had my heads worked buy a great reputable shop. I also added headers. I got my base tune for my car and headed back home. Upon start up the car smoked very bad but ran well not Missing or anything. Tuner took out mis fire tables so I was not able to put a computer on it to tell but it sounded fine. I drove it 2 days and it would always smoke when I started it up and under a 3-4k pull it would ping loud and shoot lots of smoke then. So I pulled the intake and noticed my intake was full Of oil. All of my intake runners were soaked in oil. What do You guys think it could be? It’s driving me nuts. Please help Me if you can. |

When the heads were ported they likely poked through where the rocker bolts/studs go. It is common on ported stock heads as there isn't much thickness in that location to remove a lot of metal. You need to use RTV on the rocker bolts.
It may be something else, but I am fairly certain this is your issue.

Ok sorry so by worked heads i meant rebuilt the heads with new seals and valve job. They are stocks, no port job. Just a few things I’ve noticed since I’ve posted. My push rods and rockers seem a bit dryer then what I’m normally used to. And on my dod delete kit, I have the valley cover that only has the oil pressure switch no vent. So I am still using the driver side valve cover for my vent. But I don’t think that would change any thing. The cam is a super small cam I wouldn’t even call it a stage 1 cam

I don't know what it entails deleting the dod exactly but i don't see why that would cause it. I also don't know exactly how the pcv system works on these but i would lean towards a pcv issue. I know there is an updated valve cover for some of the older models that were using oil. Once you get it sorted out I'd also add a catch can.

I will for sure. But only thing that has me puzzled is what has changed since before. I took off one side header and the collector is damn near wet with oil. So it’s sucking a hell of a lot
Of oil in that intake from the drive side vent hose. |

I believe the driver side is the updated valve cover with updated baffling for the pcv system. You might want to do a compression test for the hell of it. If you have blown out some rings the excess crankcase pressure will do it. Leaning more towards pcv though since you said it ran good? Though running a misfire on cylinder 7 for 5 months doesn't sound good. I'd probably look into what infid said too.

I see. Might want pop the head back on pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it for a compression test. I expect they did new valve seals already.

That valley cover vent really shouldn't make a difference. When I swapped my L99 for the LS3 I was researching this to see what was the recommended way to connect the catch can. From everything I read, the L99 has the superior PCV system though. I was trying to figure out whether I should run my catch can intake off the driver's side valve cover or the valley cover vent. Some said I could use the valley cover without issue, some said I can cap the valley and continue to use the L99 driver side valve cover vent, and others actually said I could set up a system with a T connecter and use both. I decided to the the valley cover only because it was easier since my catch can was moved the the passenger side, but I may 'T' them eventually for better balance. The L99 should already have the updated valve covers. As said above, the older valve covers were known to have an issue with allowing excess oil through PCV but this was supposedly worked out by the time our cars came out. So I guess that was just a long way of saying that you should still be able to pull from the drivers side valve cover for PCV. That said, I agree with greenhornet that it seems like a PCV issue, assuming you don't have a sudden ring problem. I would do like he said and run a compression test just to cross that off the list. You don't want to be chasing your tail on this. I had a similar issue right after my engine swap, but the big difference was that I also had my rings replaced and they just hadn't seated yet. As green said, I would definitely get a catch can on it now that it's making more power, as long as it isn't just a band aid.

Well I had engine rebuilt and it did same thing. I pulled the drive side pcv hose off and blocked the hose off. Vented the valve cover to atmosphere and car stopped smoking and runs good again.

Interesting. I have to bow out as i don't have a full knowledge of the pcv system. If i were in your shoes I'd be talking to Jannetty racing, they always have good insight. If your rings are good maybe you have an issue with the pcv baffling in the valve cover. Catch can for sure anx a crankcase breather but you don't want to bandaid if there's something else going on.

I would say you need to talk to a good shop, you may not have had all the pieces you needed and the shop you had do the work may not have known whats needed, with a dod /afm delete you should have the ls3 valley cover and routing of the pcv system you could talk to someone like elite engineering......you need misfire tables you need to save the engine with the computer should you have problems you need help...….. Good Luck! places to talk to that are really competent near you...…………..And I do see a good cleaning of your engine with some seafoam or other coming in your future at least with changing of your PCV system most likely, talk to Elite... and as others said someone like jannetty, GPI etc... that do the work all the time...…… it could be from the valve seals to wrong PCV to missing this or that.....
