If I was on a budget, didn't need high flow cats, wanted a cam, and wanted to plant the new power, I might do the following to maximize my $5k:

Speed Engineering long tube headers $387.97 (outfitted appropriately)

Speed Engineering 3" catback $499.99

Vararam OTR intake $378.95

Washer tank and intake scoop $116.91

Hotchkis 1" lowering springs $212.99 (Not required, but I love the look of 1" lower Camaros. See my signature for an example.)

BMR rear toe rods $129.95

BMR trailing arms $159.95

BMR rear cradle bushings $269.95

Hurst short throw shifter $274.95

BTR Stage 2 NA cam $2,500 (on the higher side of estimate for a shop to do it and get a tune)

That'll run you approximately $4,931.61. You would have gone from stock to fairly aggressive NA street machine while still maintaining good driveability. Given most of this is install yourself pricing as well.

Only things I'd change are:

Speed Engineering 3" catback $499.99 - no need - just get a $100 x-pipe. - $400 saved

Washer tank and intake scoop $116.91 - cool, but not really needed

BMR rear cradle bushings $269.95 - Prothane has them for $120 and probably are just as good - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Add - front control arm bushing inserts - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - $18

Add - steering rack bushings - like $20

With the $500ish saved you could get GPI's ported/rod modded manifold which goes well with a cammed setup.

With my full bolt on setup I beat every 6th gen that I faced so far. Plus wear happens on all cars and I do most things myself so not a big deal since after working in a dealership for 10 years 90% of the warranty claims were cheap items.
So in your thinking there is no reason to get a classic car? I say get what you enjoy and what you can afford.

The 5th gen is far from being a classic ,maybe in 20 years MAYBE. A Z28 ,a ZL1 and maybe just maybe even a 1LE.

Sounds like you should go buy a 6th gen then. You can help their piss poor sales. I'd buy a vette first for damn near the same price as a 6th gen camaro. Wonder why they don't sell if they're so much better than the 5th gen.

to each their own. to me I think of the camaro 6 as more sports car then muscle and for some that isn't what they're after. what I want is the ability to make a car mine, custom to how I want it. Cant say you cant do that with a 6gen but for me it's not feasible to purchase a new car and tear the original parts out of it right away.
I've been driving and modding 996 and 997 911's for the last 15 or so years and had my fill on sports cars. this time I wanted a muscle type car that can handle track based more on driver skill without reinventing the wheel. I always wanted a first gen but decided on a 2015 instead .....if i change my mind in the future and decide that I want a sports car again I wouldn't choose a new(er) camaro.

And the price difference between the sale of a 2010 and a new 2020? talk about not getting your money back!

You're forgetting the 2010 was the first year Camaros were back...that has potential to make them "classics"...in time. First year's are always worth the most if they make it to 25+ years.

A 1967 brings less than a 1969 because it looks better even without a vent window. As far as getting a new Corvette ,that's what I have been waiting to do ,but the c8's are hard to come by. The hot deal is the 2019 Grand Sport ,and Kerbeck has some for around $58000.00. Looks like I am waiting for the 2021 C8 and keeping the SS RS 1LE until I can get a C8.

I'll agree with Blacksunshine and GONIF. Firsts of something typically hold value better like first edition books. However, the first year doesn't necessarily mean that it will be a more expensive eventually. I'd love for my early production Camaro to be more valuable. However, I think the desirable rare color is going to be the deciding factor for 2010 for my car more than it being an early production car, even though the color makes it an earlier production car. The rare 5th gens are going to be the rare production colors, ZL1, Z/28, and a few special editions IMO.

Who cares about the collector car status at this point anyway? Unless you have >10,000 miles on one, the chances are that you're going to have low enough miles to make it to a truly collector car status car is slim to none. Modify your car to your heart's desire, keep the stock parts if you're after collector car status, and one day way down the road (20+ more years) put it back stock and take it to shows and show people how your car is stock and in good shape. Me? I'm going to leave it cammed, snarling and loud so that I can be "that guy" at a car show in 20 years with the modified classic car.

These 5th gens are a hoot to drive and were a real performance bargain back then .Inflation in the last 10 years has been killing us. And it will continue to get worse ,As The BTO song goes "YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET"
No matter what my next car will have only 2 doors, a bowtie ,V8, an auto trans ,magneride and pushrods .

If you want the car to sound like it's got 5k Put into it, and not just a generic muffler. I'd go with a Long Tube catless setup *KOOKS* into a full corsa exhaust. I persoanlly ordered up the ZL1 version for the quads and 3inch, but you can't go wrong with anything corsa. This is if you're looking for a loud exhaust set up. * Exhaust is loud outside but very tame on the inside* Will 100% make it feel like a completely new car. Especially if you're stick. The downshifts are nasty. You can't go wrong with a Borla ATAK either.
