Time for Tires

Well time for set #3

Set 1 - Trofeo R - 4,020 miles - no track days - GM track alignment done at 1,250 miles on car - spirited street driving. Pretty even wear, a little extra wear on inside front edge, as expected from added negative camber. Tires were pretty much toast at 2/32's when they came off.

Set 2 - Goodyear Supercar 3R - 2,320 miles - 150 +/- track miles (two half days at Cal Speed including Roval). GM Z/28 track alignment specs still in place - Front left is now corded on inside edge and first tread block, on inside is peeling off - you can grab edge and pull pieces off. Right front shows inside edge wear, but not near the left front. Both rears showing wear on outside edges, but overall pretty even wear. Overall all 4 are pretty close to 2/32's at this point, so even if not corded on left front, pretty much done.

Set 3 - Trofeo R or Supercar 3R?
26 vs 28 lbs -
6/32's tread at 60 tread wear rating vs 5/32's at 100 on 3R
102Y (1,864 lbs) vs 98Y (1,635 lbs) load rating
$525 vs $344

Not considering any street tires, unless I get 2nd set of wheels, then would go with Michelin 4S for street and one of the above for track, but for now 1 set, so track tires are focus.

Regardless - new alignment after install - plan to stick with GM track spec, but open to other suggestions?

Open to comments - and interested in thoughts on 102Y vs 98Y load rating and wondering if the 3.R is just not strong enough on the left front with driver weight on that side at the track and is rolling over and causing added wear, hence the cording only on that side of car.

Or is is just alignment is track friendly, but not street friendly?

If you don't want a 'street' tyre but looking for a bit more mileage out of a set of track tyres, look at Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

They are a track tyre really, certainly in look and construction, but they have a harder compound and higher treadwear than the Trofeos, R888s or Goodyear Supercars. I have a set on my OEM rims I've done approaching 5000miles on which are still ok for road.

They were good on track initially but have heat cycled out a bit now so I won't track on that set again.

(I also have a second set of track rims running a Dunlop Sport Max Race tyre - I don't think you can get that in the US, but it's very soft and sticky so probably not what you're after anyway)

Goodyears without a doubt. Cost alone. Continue to work on alignment to max life. In time they pay for themselves. (over the Trofeo at $2100 per set vs $1375) I also don't believe the Pirellis are any faster either.

I run those Achilles Desert Hawk tires. Got them for $60 each at Walmart.
No skids, sliding, or noise making any bends. I have to buy cheap tires
as I go through them every 4-5 months. Buying directional tires, and being
staggered means no tire rotation...

Works for me...

Went with another set of 3R - will align back to street spec and see how they do. Then align till I go to track. Almost went Michelin 4S - but just don't drive enough to need street tires - 6,400 miles in 3.5 years, so I figured 3 sets of 3R is same cost of 2 sets of Trofeos! Just don't want to give up the fun on the 3R, Cup or Trofeo - just stick too good!

Which make less noise the 3R's or Trofeo's? I have two sets of wheels and will need to buy tires for both sets. Debating between 3R for the track and MP4S for the street. Or just 3R's for both track and street if noise is less than the Trofeo's.

If I had 2 sets - I would go with MP4S for street and Trofeo's or 3R for track.

I think 3R's may be a little quieter - but I went from dead trofeos to new 3R's so at new they are always better.

My buddy has 4S on his Z and they ride better and are a lot quieter than the Trofeo's or 3R.

Supercup,

Mind if you share the street spec alignment?
Mind if you share the track spec alignment?

Just curious and want info for my records. I got the street alignment spec from my dealer, just want second opinion on specs. Thank you.

My track alignment was per the GM Performance Z/28 track set up - that was about all the negative camber we could get out of it (-1/5 degrees).

For the street I don't have a street spec - just plan to go to the dealer and have them put it to standard Z/28 settings - which I don't have - see what they have to say an go from there.

New 3R's went on - they look so good when new!

When RR was put on balancer - wheel seems to have slight bend in it. No visible damage, but a clear wave when spinning with just tire and no weights. Balanced ok with weights - but bummer to that - unless it was the tire itself - when they come off will have them spin just that wheel and see what happens.

Might be time for another set of wheels!
