I totally forgot I used to do that with my '82 and '91 Camaro's. lol Though I think it was kitty litter or cinder blocks. I never really did it with the '02 though. |

I figure having traction control with a manual and TOP quality dedicated SNOW tires it should be fine if I drive smart. MANY BMW owners on the BMW forums use SNOW tires and get around fine. Remember years ago when ALL cars were RWD. I had a 1998 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner that looked just like a 4WD but wasn't, in fact it only had 1 wheel that turned in the rear. It had a real hard time starting to move in the snow, but once I got it moving it was OK.
I will just get NARROW tire like 225/60/18" Blizzak LM-25 or Dunlop M3/D3. And a few bags of sand in the trunk. I just wanted opinions and actual people who have used their Camaro's in the winter with winter tires. |

Well I can tell you from experience with the GTO (I guess technically the Camaro's closest living kin lol) that the car did amazngly well for me when traveling on more than one occasion. I also only had all seasons not snow tires. I traveled all the way to the NY area from Atlanta and had zero issues. It did better than my FWD Grand Prix. The GTO being a generation older suspension and TC wise should mean the Camaro will be great.

The extra weight of the gen 5 camaro will make it more predictable in the snow than previous generations. Still any car with that much torque is going to be difficult. I'm refering to the SS, I think the v6 will be a much better choice for winter conditions.

I too have a GTO. We had some big snow over the winter here in STL. It was pretty scary. Traction control helps usually. But sometimes turning it off is helpful.
I would get stuck on hills and have to do that. Turn the tc off. I nearly spun out on the highway because I lifted my foot off the throttle and I was on a slightly banked curb. So essentially I had lift throttle oversteer at like 30 mph. Luckily I was able to steer into it and keep from spinning, but after the first time the rear whipped out to the right, it then whipped around to the left. I was able to steer out of that too, but that was pretty terrifying. All on the highway with cars behind me. I'm obviously less enthusiastic about that car in the snow. I remember there being a rash of guys crashing them in winter conditions. Some didn't even need snow to cause them to crash. Just a little water. Tons of guys wrecked them over this winter. Obviously there's the driver error to consider, but it just shows that it takes at least a little concentration and brains to keep them right side up. All of my experiences were on stock 17 in rims and tires. Also, my car is a manual transmission model. |

I just figure getting the best dedicated SNOW tires like Blizzak LM-25's will make a big difference, plus taking it easy and starting in 2nd gear with a manual. I only drive 2.2 miles to work 14 days a month.

I'm from Northen Il aswell. Hopefully I will be closer to work by then but I will probably have to get rid of my truck to get the SS. I will probably have to drive it through at least one winter before I can afford another explorer or something. I figure the suspension geometry, IRS and extensive winter testing will make this car much better than the 4th gens. I plan on buying an extra pair of 20" front wheels and tires to put on the back for the winter months.
