Excessive oil consumption lawsuit
I was reading elsewhere that GM was settling some excessive oil consumption lawsuits for the 4 cylinder & the 5.3. Everything I read said they extended warranties on other models with the v6 but the Camaro was excluded. Anyone know if there is any litigation going on? It seems it's a well known problem but if it's in a Camaro too bad. I read the CTS was extended to 120,000 for issues such as the timing chain. I have a 2010 with the v6 that runs great. No leaks. Drinks oil like a drunken sailor though. It would be nice if they did something to make this right.

There is a FIX for the 3.6 engines, a new valve cover gasket:

Can it be that simple? Gaskets are cheap. I'll give it a try. Get a new PCV valve too while I have it apart. If it helps at all I'll be happy.
I was told by a friend of mine that has his own auto repair business that it was the rings. Same thing with the 5.3's. |

You won't need a new PCV, just clean it. It does not have a spring and check-ball,
just two holes in the bottom, and one at the top. If you are 2010 to early 2013, then update the part with drilling. Two bottom holes to 5/64th, and the top to 7/64th. You can pull it out of the valve cover to clean it, and update it if needed. https://youtu.be/yL0DIBV1hck https://youtu.be/8ohm2rOtBb4 https://youtu.be/wCV1KMrX4uI As far as it being that simple? Well, GM updated the part for that reason. |

would you happen to know the part#? I'll just order it online from GM parts direct.

I can attest to this, the gasket design was updated.
I replaced my valve covers entirely, since I wasn't sure if other parts of the design changed as well. It also included a new PCV barb. You might be okay just getting the updated gaskets and cleaning your old PCV barb. See attached images. I noticed a reduction in oil being used, however it still uses/burns a bit less than one quart between oil changes. Some notes: -There's RTV where the timing cover mates with the head. Clean and reapply fresh little dabs of RTV when you have this apart. -The spark plug tubes will be tight to the new gaskets on the new valve covers. Put a bit of oil on the spark plug tube gaskets (Haynes service manual recommended this). |

Thanks for the pictures, that's neat.
Yeah, the driver side is the clean air side, so that would look lighter on that side. Most of the oil vapor is on the passenger side. Wonder why there is no metal piece on the passenger side VC top. That's one job I am NOT looking forward too... |

What? GM settling another issue with the V6 engines and NOT including the camaro in the warranty/repairs? Color me surprised.

I guess my only real question is if you haven't already and if you are one of the lucky ones who hasn't had the issue yet, will this same your timing chains?
