BTW, if you don't have a ham license, I think some states argue that if the device can also receive NOAA weather boradcasts then it's legal. And some say they are legal so long as you didn't use them in a crime. Which is funny IMO because if you're a criminal why would you care? |

That's a good question. I would think around your home you might be concerned about crime in your area. In your car though... just like radar detectors, some officers might see that as intent to speed or violate the law.

true by the time you hear something on the scanner, your being pulled over. besides, if you are tring to use it to race your out of luck because most of the major agencys have gone encripted. you may still hear the dispatch though; but i doubt it. just go to the track.

Fro the Record its not going in the Maro. Its goin in to my current car. And the thing is that all the tracks within the hour of me and my friends wont allow us, or any one from the public anymore. So we a a place we race at. Its an old abandoned region of Glendale. There are never any cars, on or parked on the streets we basically treat it as a track. We set up some homemade reclaimed water containers and a fences behind them, with those concreted barriers behind them. My friend Arman even found an old tree we use(except we have Pink orange and blue lights). But the cops always bust us up. In the 3 years no one, and I mean no one has ever been hurt and only one car hit the barrier, and he was an idiot. So the scanner is to atleast get us out of there befor we get arrested again, by Glendale's **crooked** Finest.
BTW: One my sheriff cousins, whos' name will be left anonymous, recommended that I get one, because even he agrees that glendale's cops are crooked.

I can assure you Beast, this post will not be well received.
On a sidenote though, I used to love sitting with my Grandfather when I was a wee one and listening to the police scanner. We'd go shopping at RS and get the newest crystals when we'd find out about a new frequency. Major nostalgia alert for me! |

If that's all the scanner is going to be used for, you'll have to remember that some transmissions aren't put out over the air. They can be sent directly to the officers "laptop" tv. If that's the case, they will ride right up on you and once again, someone is going to be headed to jail. I'd say, if they say it's not legal, better to not put yourself in that position.
FYI, for everyone that think scanners will help you in speeding situations, think again. Radar detectors work for speed traps.....and that's only if the officer has the radar on while you are far enough away to be able to react in time. Most officers turn their radar on and off frequently as the cars come and go. Scanners do nothing for this. For those wanting to know about crime in their area, IF you are able to listen in on the transmissions, you'd get a real laugh out of some of the calls in your area. But, if you are doing it so you can learn about the crime in your area, a scanner isn't the way to go to learn about it. Statistics for your area are the way to go. All of that is public information. Just pick it up. |

Tag you're a cop right? If yo are dont you guys have that one completly abandoned area of your town? IN our little area only the old cop cars come by, we have 2 chargers but those guys dont care, and the ones that patrol our tracks' area are the old crown vics with vette engines so they can move. and we dont bother anyone but thejust coem over and basically harass us. One squad car chased down a friend of mine and pulled him out his window.and threw him into a pile of tires. thats police brutality but we can really do anything so we jsut run.
EDIT: one of those chargers actually raced us one night. And it was FAST
