new owner cooling mod ?s

hello. hoping to do a lot of reading and less posting repeat questions. so sorry in advance. not new to LS platform but new to the LSA.

i just picked up my 2012 6spd and it has some tasteful mods. i am looking for an underhood expansion tank and upgraded heat exchanger. the exchanger i see that is popular is the alradco, looks goo and i know the brand is good.

1. is there an expansion tank made to fit toward the front of the engine bay? my mighty mouse catch can is on the pass front area, the RPM 5" intake forced the windshield reservoir to the driver shock tower. its getting tight under there and i havent come across one that is made to fit where i have space.

2. is the fan setup on the heat exchanger needed? i assume yes as it will help alot and summers here see 90. also do you think i need a upgraded pump at that time?

car is simple boltons; idx 1050s, kong ported blower, 2.55 upper, intake, 2" ARH headers.

BONUS ?, i will be doing all fluids come spring. rear and trans are easy drain/fill. open for tips on the coolant for engine and blower system. also brake/clutch bleed. seems those 2 systems are shared on this car which is different than i am used to. i do have a pressure bleeder from my ctsV.

Yes, fans are necessary to cool when it is hot outside. D3 tank (other versions are now available) mount in front of engine on radiator. You may also want to install a transmission dipstick.

See D3/Prospeed Tank photo. For HX I drain every summer and run 100% Distilled with a few caps of Waterwetter.

Just hand pump out the D3 tank and add Dexcool until I get -25 degrees on the bubler. In the summer I put it on the lift take off the Ground effects pan cause I am usually changing oil anyway, and I pop the purple release clip on the lower HX hose and drain into a 5 gallon bucket. Refill from the D3 with Distilled Water and wetter.

Stock tb, stock upper, 18% lower. Not a fan of upper.

thank you that prospeed looks like what the doc ordered. i plan on running some dex in the blower as well. as far as burping the system i imagine that pretty wasy with the expansion tank installed?

what about the pump?

why would i need a dipstick for the manual trans? drain, fill, if it aint leaking it doesnt need fluid. or am i missing something?

The expansion tanks make bleeding simple you just run the engine with the cap off and keep adding fluid. Almost fill the expansion tank then fill the SC and keep an eye on it as it will quickly fill the Expansion tank. I didn't read your engine build stats but the stock pump works well unless you are doing serious high speed tracking. The pump can keep up with most applications, its the lack of coolant or water that you attempt to cool that is the issue with high IAT's.

I might have missed something in the thread but if you have the M6 trans, you won't be needing a dipstick.

thanks. yea the first reply mentioned the dipstick and that was a new one for me coming from many t56 transmissions. this is my first tr6060 though so i was open to learning.

Expansion tanks only delay heat soak... better cooling comes from a better HX and Radiator.

I run a 160 tstat, fans adjusted in HPTuners, Ron Davis Radiator/HX, and a Rotofab Res

80/20 Distilled/Dexcool w/ Redline Water Wetter

I believe op was already installing HX, he just had a question on the necessity of fans.

thanks. def going with HX w/ fans and expansion. already have the lower stat and tuned for it. more was looking fluid mixture ideas and the right parts to complement what is already on the car.

anyone care to chime in on clutch/brake bleed? can i bleed the clutch without messing with the brakes since they share the same reservoir? i would like to give it a bleed come spring for peace of mind.

Being that is a 2012, I would replace the brake fluid in both clutch and brakes, unless you know that it's been done recently.
