About the Camaro V6 beating a Mustang GT....stock vs stock, I highly doubt that. I am not trying to incite anything but I simply wanna ask, how do you react or feel when someone says, "nice car, is the SS V8 or just a V6?" (you know the tone of some of these envious people). I have gotten asked that almost every other time at a gas station, etc. Honestly, again, not to incite anything, when I get asked that, I am so glad I have the SS LS3. I would hate to let some of those envious knuckleheads walk away smirking and feeling like they rained on my parade. That is just me. I am sensitive...I am weak....I got issues..I need help...

Hey, I can only tell you what my uncle told me back then, as it used to be his. By the time I got it it had nearly 100,000 miles on it, so I really couldn't say from the feel of the car.

Until the day comes where the V6 makes more HP and TQ than the same year V8, there will always be some hate for the V6. Just like if a supercharged Z28 comes out tomorrow there will be hate for the SS. The top model rules the street, simple as that.

Try 190 hp. I had an 82 z28 and it was even worse. The new v6 has more power than the v8's from 1972 to well into the 1990's. I did have a 1970 z28 with a few tricks that put it over 400 hp but it still would probably only run 13.2 in the quarter mile.

But the point I was making stands. Would they be making fun of a classic Camaro? Nope.

The auto industry was caught up in the late '60's Horsepower wars. When the first fuel crisis hit then things turned. Fuel ecomony and environmental concerns ruled the day. It took until the mid '80's for the Manufacturers to start to catch up. By the end of the '90's the technolgy was emerging to give us much more efficient, more environmentally friendly, powerful automobiles. Government Mandates didn't restrict horespower, per se, it was a lack of technology at the time. Let's be realistic here. Consider what you get with a 2010 Camaro with the LS3..... 426 horspower, and darn good fuel economy. (17/24 ) No way in hell, that the original Camaros (COPO or otherwise) could come close to this kind of efficiency and be as clean running in terms of emissions. Been there, lived through it and actually, this is why I feel this new Camaro is light years ahead of what we had back in the day. If you don't believe it, go back and look at the Laws that were in place. About the only Manufacturers that had any semblance of power were the Foreign Exotics sold at the time. (i.e. Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.) Becuasethey were far enough advanced to bring their technology to a market where cost was no object. The manufacturers worked with what they had and it took almost 30 years to develop the necessary technolgies to be where we are at today. Bottomline is, that it was a lag in technology that did the most damage to performance at the time.

I've got a 2LT on order and there was a 2SS in the lot and available to drive away today if I so desired. I had one friend start to give me grief about not getting the V8 until I told him it was 304 HP. He didn't know it was that much. My decision was purely financial as the V6 has a lower total cost of ownership than the V8. I got the same grief with my 883 Harley. People asked why I didn't get the 1200. The 883 got my happy butt up the freeway at 85mph without a problem and I never regretted getting the smaller motor. I am getting a stick but that's largely because I enjoy driving a stick (even in stop and go traffic.)
Don't hate the playa. Hate the game. |
