If it's that much, this is a total bargain motor

Other than a possible warranty from gm, I don't get the big deal over this. If you're a racer and are looking to drop 20-30k on a race engine, you can be sure that a gm crate would be last on the list of options if even on the list at all. I would venture to guess this crate engine will be at least 30k...min. Which if that's the case then yeah much better built engines can be had for that price. We had a 632 built back in 2006 that made over 1400 HP on race gas and made 1,800+ on 2 kits. We also had a back up 500+ cubic inch that was thrown together with stuff from summit racing and it made around 1,200 HP on race gas and 1,400+ on 1 kit. We ran those 2 engines for about 10 years before we stepped up to a billet hemi headed 792 sonny.

The big thing that I think is being missed isn’t that it’s 1,004 hp. The impressive bit is that it is a 1,004 naturally aspirated, pump gas powered horsepower. Add a little boost and some E85 and this thing will be beyond ridiculous.
Also, I wonder if the new COPO 572 intake would fit this engine. I know the blocks are very similar, but I wonder about the heads.

Yep. I believe the machine to make it is 16k and they said upwards of that so $20k is about right. Believable as the LS7 was $14k, LS3 was $8k so 1004HP N/A? Yea def $20k. Badass motor no doubt!
I’d say just buying one and holding it would increase in value. I wouldn’t call it a huge investment but definitely an investment
