TSP VVT1.2 Cam Change - I have bent intake valves?
So, I'm just now getting everything buttoned up. It's been taking a while because of addressing other disasters around my home. I've been trying to build a garage all winter long, and a dump truck knocked over a large concrete block wall. Now tied up with building inpsectors, insurance, etc.
Remember me? The guy that didn't check the head gasket part numbers (recieved LS1 instead of LS3) from Texas Speed in my DOD/AFM delete with VVT1.2 cam kit. See link here: https://www.camaro5.com/forums/showt...=602395&page=4 And now drum roll please,...I have bent the intake valves on #1 and #3 cylinder after trying to fire up for the 1st time. #5 and #7 are visually ok as I pulled the driver side head. I did a leak test on #2 and it is bent. Will need to pull that head too. I don't know what has happened, but I haven't yet pulled the timing chain off of the single bolt TSP 1.2VVT cam to see if dowel pin sheared??? I have just pulled the driver's side head at this point. Yes, I lined up the cam at 6 o'clock and crankshaft at 12 o'clock. I remember taking pains trying to line up those marks. But obviously I've made a mistake somewhere. (Tried to start it once, and it sounded like an old small block chevy 180 degrees out of phase, so I immediately stopped) |

Was a cam phaser limiter block installed in your phaser gear ?
Did you have a start up tune ? I could be wrong but when I did my vvt stage 3 for my truck my tuner told me not to start it at all until he gives me a start up tune .. I take it you never verified if the dowel pin from the cam was in the notch In the back of the phaser gear ? Last edited by Risingson05; 04-22-2022 at 11:43 AM. |

With that said L99 pistons have an indentation in them to avoid PVC its pretty difficult unless something is really off like timing, incorrect rods. Etc.... No offense but you did swap the dod lifters and replaced factory pushrods right? Sent from my SM-F916U using Tapatalk |

2. Dowel Pin appeared to have engaged cam sprocket in assembly, but difficult to tell. Will verify as I disassemble. 3. TSP indicated only DOD need be turned off, it was. |

When you open the door the phaser gear to install the limiter block there was one screw that you wer suppose to leave intact - I only know this as I undid it and hear a spring let go and had to buy another phaser gear .
The bolt you leave intact you just loosen to swing the phaser gear door open Last edited by Risingson05; 04-23-2022 at 02:35 AM. |

It's my goof! Looks like the cam dowel did not engage the timing chain gear. This is a trick to install it appears. Any advice appreciated. Back of Cam Gear. See dimple. Looks like about 60 degrees off. That would do it!
Does anyone know how far the dowel on the VVT1.2 Texas Speed Cam should protrude into the gear? Below are my measurements of the dowel pin length protruding from the face of the cam. GM cam = .180" TSP cam = .100" (I may have shoved the dowel further into the cam during the faulty install,..it did not mushroom) See the picture where I'm measuring with the calipers. |

Glad you found it !! That dowel looks alittle compressed if it were me , I’d go ahead and buy a new cam - peace of mind thing
I painted the dowel with red finger nail polish and just like how it left an indentation on the back of the gear is how I knew which direction to rotate it . Then by repeat to get it closer and then in the hole |

Are the lighter LS3 valves by GM the valves of choice? Looks like all intake valves are bent after I checked them. Exhaust valves are fine.
I see Manley valves & Melling are other choices. |
