Door handle latch

I took my outside doorhandles off and was going to reinstall the one on the driver side but the latch that hooks onto the door handle was very far away. On the passenger side I was able to get the doorhandle back on because the latch was close. How do I get the doorhandle latch on the driver side to come closer. I’ve tried pushing on it with the screwdriver and even use my finger because my interior door panel was off but it wouldn’t move forward. What do I do?

After 2 hours of messing with it, I turned the t20 clockwise for about a minute straight. That let the latch move much more than before, however it was still far away. I stuck my arm through the door panel and pushed the latch forward, at the same time I hooked the door handle to the latch. I pinched myself very bad in the process but it was worth it.

It’s not a real project until you bleed on it.

It's been too long since I replaced my outside door handles, but I'm thinking I had to release it from the inside door release handle, if it got moved into latch or unlatch positions.

Scars make for great stories if you don't die.
