Stolen Camaros

At one time there was a high number of 5th generation Camaros being stolen, especially V8s. How do my fellow Z/28 owners feel about parking their cars out in the cruel world?

My Z is my #1 hobby/therapy machine. When it is not in my alarmed garage I'm always in it or VERY close by.

I think that was mostly in the Oakland/SF Bay area.

In the Detroit area it was/is the Mopars

In and around Toronto its high end SUV's and pickups

Thieves look for fast turn around and very popular cars to make a quick buck. Z/28's do not meet this criteria. I do not worry.....much.

I live in the Bay Area. I've lost count on how many Bay Area Z/28's that were stripped for parts are in the Wrecked Z/28 thread. I'm not as worried about it as I used to be but I still just use mine as a point A to A car or sometimes to the office where I can easily see it from my desk. I never leave it outside unattended for hours anywhere. I think it's most vulnerable when re-fueling and I'm selective on what time of day I do that. Not an issue when outside the Bay Area.

These car's are easy to steal and I've done some easy security measures to mine to make it a little harder to take. I can PM what I did. But in the end I try not to be careless and it has a good insurance policy.

Good comments, thanks!
I do think the Z/28 is a magnet for theft if parked in the wrong spot and area to long!

Hey! I’d be curious as to what simple security measures you did. Could you message me?

Thanks!

I think we are all interested!
An electrical cut off switch is probably the answer, but that’s just an assumption.

+1
Back in the day, an inline switch to the starter relay was what we did. Not sure if that still works with ecms and bcms nowadays.
Thieves are interested in a quick getaway when stealing a car. Even if they think one is there, they’ll get frustrated real quick when they don’t know where the switch is and beat feet.

It would still work. Starter is the same. I don't see any difference between the starter on my O2 Silverado and the Camaros. Thief could try to jump past the solenoid though, but I guess any deterrent is just a deterrent.

I'm interested as well. Thanks!

Insurance is not an issue. Z cannot be replaced and parts are EOL. These keep me awake at night....
