New Carbon Fiber Hood. Ways to protect it
I just ordered an Anderson Composite Cowl hood. I got a heat shield to protect it from the engine heat. What are the best ways to protect the top. A ppf or clear coat or can I just get away with using chemical guys ceramic coat. I don’t want it to yellow or fade.

Anderson composites will probably tell you if you need to do anything. If so they probably will have recommendations.

It should be clearcoated from Anderson out of the box so no worries there. Ceramic coat is not protection if you're worried about stones and road debris. PPF is your only answer for that. After 8 years of experience, I will vouch for xpel. Worth every penny.

This here is your best bet by far! It will keep it shiney looking AND protect it from the stones and other crap that might attack it. Good luck.

Back when the 5th gen ZL1's came out with th eoptional exposed carbon fiber insert, we were told that a special (very expensive) UV resistant clear coat was used. IIRC, this UV clear coat ran between $70-100 per quart ?
No idea if that's true or not. A couple years ago, when I had some painting done, I had a small flaw in the clear coat on the ECF insert. The paint shop said they could bake the flaw a bit better (but not completely) while they were paining my hood. As far as I know that just the usual clear coat that they used on the painted areas and not the super expensive UV clear coat. So far it's held up just fine. No fading detectable. |

Quick word of advice. I’m assuming your new hood has been clear coated for some time, prior to being delivered. If not, most reputable PPF installers will tell you that you want to wait a good 30-45 days for the paint/clear to cure properly before you wrap it.

Yes Sir. Track, freeway, XPEL has never failed me. Only once the damage was so bad that I had to replace the entire piece, but well worth it. The wrap did it’s job, saved the paint underneath.

Yep, my friend that has a 2013 ZL1 has pretty much the entire front end and the hood wrapped with the expel film, and the rockers and front part of his rear fenders where the gills are.

I have a VIS Carbon hood and the finish went to crap in less than 3 months. its been to 3 body shops and 3 detailers all who tried to "polish" it but the haze came back within days. They all say it needs to be sanded and recleared. VIS and VIVID racing (the company i bought it from) both told me it was my problem and that I "probably dont take care of my car". So yeah, i love my hood but both of those companies can kick rocks and Id recommend everyone to stay away. March my car goes to the body shop for my front end to be resprayed and they are gonna refinish my hood as well.
