Rattlin supercharger: Update finally

I have a 2013 ZL1 and as luck would have it I had read a thread here on this forum about another member changing over to a solid isolator. So that day I went and got into my car and drove it to a friends house and he wanted to see the motor. I had already started it and when I opened the hood you could hear the famous rattle. So I came home and parked it and called my local chevy store and they wanted me to bring it to them. I did and they confirmed it was the problem. They told me my warranty on that part runs out on December 1st of this year so I got lucky I guess that it started now instead of a month or two down the road. Any way the point of this is now I sit and wait because the service guy told me the parts are on backorder and he does not know when they will get them. I checked last friday and they have had no news when to expect the parts. They also told me not to drive it so it is back in my garage with the cover on it waiting for the parts. Is anyone else doing the same or do any of you know when I could expect the parts or any info of what is going on? Hell I hope I get parts for it because now days you do not know what to expect with anything.

All you have to do is swap in a new isolator. Make sure its a solid one. All the new warranty replacements are the exact same spring isolator with extra grease. It can happen again over the next few years unless you get them to install a solid one. Drive the car it’s not going to damage it any farther unless you beat the hell out the car. Normal driving will be fine till the next one comes in.

Call another dealer, even a Cadillac dealer and see if they have the blower. You get a brand new blower from GM not just the isolator.

Get a new blower and put in the solid isolator, that's what I did.

The service guy told me the bulletin he had called for a solid isolator to be installed along with a new blower. He said GM will ship it all together he thought ready to install. I sure hope that is the case and it gets done like that.

That’s what I received when mine was covered under warranty!

I had mine replaced in 18 and it came with a new spring isolator. Maybe they changed that since then. I would double check before they install the new one.

I did. I called him back yesterday and he read the bulletin back to me and it said they put a solid isolator on it instead of the spring isolator. I will make sure that he understands that when I take my car back to them when the parts come in.

IIRC, the original isolator was spring loaded with no grease, then they changed to a solid isolator,. Some time later they changed to a spring loaded isolator that was packed with grease to dampen the sound.

According to Eaton who was the OEM, the isolator was intentionally designed to be spring loaded around a shaft that was slightly softer by design, which resulted in groves being worn in the shaft. It was spring loaded on purpose to absorb some of the inherent 'rattling' of the gears that drive the supercharger lobes.
Unfortunately as this 'rattling' became somewhat audible and people disassemble the isolator and found the grooves worn in the shaft, they figured the worn grooves were a sign of impending failure and complained to Eaton.

Eaton responded quickly to change to a solid shaft isolator to please the people that complained about the 'rattling'.

Eaton then decided that it was in there opinion to go back to a spring loaded shaft to deal with the original issue of the gears/lobes in the supercharger, but to help alleviate the rattling, they packed the isolator with grease.

Note, this is just what I remember, the original issues being 9 years ago.
It may or may not be entirely accurate.

My 2013 developed the rattle in September. Was diagnosed and approved for warranty replacement on September 30th and I’m still waiting for the parts to arrive.

I put the car in storage and told the dealership I’ll see them in the spring when the car comes out of storage. They said they would hold the parts for me when they arrive. They damn well better be ready when it comes out of storage! My warranty extension expires in mid May.

Since September? O crap! I hope I do not have to wait that long. The service guy did tell me that he got an email from GM and they are going to confirm a date on the 30th of this month when the parts will be shipped to them so maybe I will have good news then.

Ok sounds good. I just hope it doesn’t take 3-4 months to get it repaired and done. I know GM doesn’t get in a hurry. Thanks

Mine was replaced in December of 2021. Didn't have to wait long for replacement parts. Dealer told me they couldn't confirm the new blower would have a solid isolator. When I asked if they could open it and check, I was told it was a new part and disassembling it would void the warranty.
