Engine concerns
So the last few days, I’ve heard a tapping noise coming from my engine, and it speeds up as I accelerate. I’m experiencing occasional lag and a knock when idle. I’m thinking either a misfiring cylinder or maybe the MAF sensor. Any pointers on what I should do until I can get it into the mechanic? I don’t want to blow my engine up but have no backup car for work

Might be a lifter. Take a long screwdriver and put the tip on your valve cover over each cylinder, and your ear on the handle of the screwdriver. If it is a lifter is should be pretty loud when you are over it.

When I bought my camaro it had a tapping noise coming from the engine that also speed up when I accelerate. I wasn't concerned because I was throwing a cam in it. I thought it was a lifter, but in my situation it turned out the needle bearings from a few rocker arms fell out. I put 10,000 miles on the car with it being like that before I fixed it. Of course your situation may be different. I'm hoping it's not valvetrain related since this is your daily. No check engine light I assume?

There was briefly for about 30 seconds and then it disappeared the rest of the drive. I’m going to put my code reader on it tonight and take it for a drive to see if anything comes up

You said it speeds up as the car accelerates. Does it still make noise with the engine running but the car stopped? I guess we're assuming it's the engine but...

The noise is very slow at idle, there is more of a full vehicle knock that you can physically feel.

Check engine lit? Enough misfire to really fill will typically throw a code. With that mileage it could be rod nock or a bad lifter. Next to impossible to diagnose a noise without hearing in person though. Anything we suggest based on your description is pretty much just a guess.
No reason to expect the MAF. |

Is there anyway that you can post a video of it?
