GenV ZL1 and SS Axle Disassembly and ZL1 Hubs

I was putting a 1LE axle in the vert over the summer and it had tiny nick at the clamp on the inner CV joint. I had a stock axle laying around, so I decided to try and get the boot off of that one, but when I pulled the boot back and cleaned it up, I did not see anywhere to remove a snap ring like the dozen times I had done on trucks so I tossed the SS axle and hoped for the best.

Yesterday, I was hunting down a rattle on the vert (it was exhaust) and saw the 1LE axle was slinging some grease. I happen to have some time on my hands waiting on parts for the turbo car so I decided to take another stab at CV removal starting with YouTube. Apparently, there are lots of CVs that you don't remove the snap ring from as they just have a C-clip similar to spined end of the shaft that goes in the diff.

The video I watched showed to put the axle in a vise, bend the cv so that the inner is exposed a bit and hit the inner race with a hammer. I tried this with a dead blow and only succeeded in boogering up the outer lip. Good thing I was working on a broken axle. I then moved to a 10 in steel drift and a short handled 32oz ball peen. I put the drift on the race where the video showed to hit with a hammer and a couple decent whacks later, it moved about half an inch and I could pull it off. I cleaned it up a little and put some pics below for those that are interested.

In looking at the ZL1 axle, I am about 50% convinced that the outer from the ZL1 axle is the same outer used on the 1LE axle. Now I just need to figure out where I can source an American, German or even Japanese made outer. I'll update with more pics when I repair the boot on the 1LE axle. If anyone knows where to find OEM quality outers, please feel free to share.

I added a pic of taking the inner off an SS shaft to give a better idea of what I am referring to.

FYI on the SS boot, the shaft ID is 30mm, joint ID is 75mm and height is 100mm.

I believe you’re 100% correct on the outer sits the inner part of the shaft that’s different/spline count into the actual differential.

I compared the 1LE outer with the Zl1 outer today while I was repairing the CV boot. The ZL1 outer has a collar the boot attaches and I doubt the 1LE axle gets larger going into the CV joint. For those reasons I did not even bother to take the outer off the 1LE shaft to see if they were interchangeable. For anyone interested, the ZL1 shaft goint into the hub is 35mm with 33 splines and the other end going into the CV joint takes a spined shaft that is 32mm with 41 splines.

In my research on ZL1 axles, I was looking at Gen6 hubs on RockAuto and came MOOG 512663 for a 2017 ZL1. I contacted a Moog distributor hoping they could give me a spline count. When I got to the part page it showed it fit all Camaros 2010-2019, so I asked if this was correct and they sent me to Moog tech support 800-325-8886. Moog said it is listed for both Gen5 & 6 Camaros and it's only $108. I know a lot of the SKF units used by GM did not feel smooth when people got them, so this might be a quality alternative. I don't need any bearings right now as I have two still on the shelf, but next time I do, I might give these a try.

The RH Gen6 axle going into the outer CV is approximately 33mm with 30 spines.

So what you’re saying is the Gen6 axles an hub bearings will work in our 5th Gens (SS,1LE)?

At least that Moog one will, but in theory all up to 2019 should. The gen6 axle definitely slides into a GenV SKF bearing so splines are definitely the same.

Ok just remembered that our 5th Gens have a 14 mm stud and the 6th Gens have 12 mm studs.

You sure about that because the Gen6 ZL1 brake hat definitely fit over 14mm studs and the ZR1 hat drilled for 12mm studs did not. I had to drill them.
