Hi yes of course an ECU can go dead. The code is retained in the PCB with a mini battery to stop the software loss. I don't know the life of this internal battery. 7 years ?

Just hookup a small suction cup solar charger to the battery. Less than 20 online with cables etc. While it may not save the battery for starting, it might be enough to save the ECM if that replies on an internal coin battery.
