5th or 6th gear cruising at 55mph.

I was wondering I have a 2014 camaro ss auto I noticed it cruises in 5th gear at 55mph. I was wondering if stock ss camaros cruise in 5th or 6th at that speed. My car is cammed and tuned. Just wondering if my tuner changed anything

No you should be in 6th gear at that speed with the lock up converter engaged. It's really hard to find a good tranny tuner. No I take that back you probably won't have lock engaged to around 60-65 mph with that cam.

I wonder if it would let you paddle shift it to 6th? And lock up. I briefly sold and serviced auto trans dyno's once upon a time. (SuperFlow) The trans fluid temp drop was almost immediate and pretty dramatic when the converter locked up. My only concern would be prolonged cruising without lock up engaged simply due to the build up of heat. Easily changed with the right tune, I suspect.

I just watch the tach. I like to be under 2K or as close as I can get, for any cruising at speed.

This. Mine is in 6th gear at that speed, and the converter doesn't lock up until 60 mph. Stock rear gearing.

Yes. Mine will lock up at 55 cruising if I tap the upshift button and it locks the converter until I put it back in sport mode. I drive mine around town in traffic in manual mode, converter locked so I can keep the tranny cooler than being unlocked. My tuner set it up in what he called "manual auto lock", so that anytime I hit the downshift or upshift button my converter will lockup in what ever gear I am running in. Really nice tune to keep it cool.

Cool. And on a second note, I guess you know that when you slow down in manual mode, the computer will downshift for you to whatever gear it needs to be in for the speed you are going, BUT, in accelerating in manual YOU have to do the upshift because the computer doesn't know when to in manual, it's up to you. Tons of fun.

Mine seems to lock up in manual or auto pretty quick too. That's what most tuners (and tranny's) want. Ever seen that wafer thin clutch material on the TQ converter plate? Last time I saw one it wasn't much. Hope they beefed it up for the 6L80. The ones I saw were way older pass-car transmissions.

Cool man. It really helps to keep things cool and help the discs and the trans last longer. Yea, I think our 6l80's are pretty stout inside. Way back when mine took a dump, at 19k, the filter exploded and tiny pieces of plastic went all through it. There was a TSB about the filter and a high fluid spike from the pump being shimmed incorrectly causing it to either crack, or explode, mine did the later. It got fixed under warranty by GM, they rebuilt the entire trans and put a brand new converter in to be safe. I remember seeing all the internals and the clutch discs looked pretty thick.

Got it tweaked yesterday. He lowered the shifts a few hundred RPM. Has it lock up sooner Cruises in 6th at 55 now. Way better cruising MPG. Much smoother shifting transitions and even has smoother downshifts. Should note the car is an F-35 cam stock rear end gears. yank stall. The stall is from the previous owner so I dont know the exact rating but they guessing 32-3600

Awesome brother!! A little tweaking goes a long way for comfort with these tranny's.. Glad you got it sorted out.
