I hear it as well but only around 65 mph. It actually sounds like it is coming from the rear differential. I am planning to drain the factory grease and put some Royal Purple in and see if that helps.

Same noise with the 18" steel wheels and BFG's. Sounds and feels like a drive line noise. Can hear it at slower speeds and in any gear.

Have a friend drive while you are in the passenger or rear seat. Might help you with determining where the noise is coming from.

try altering your tire pressure 5 lbs up or down and see what the difference is

All my dealer did was road test the car and agree they heard the noise I was hearing, not only in my car, but two other V6 manuals on the lot. The second time, all they did was road test the car and call the GM Technical Assistance Center who claimed it was "normal", they then wrote on the workorder that no "abnormal" sound was heard. At no time did anyone think to move the tires around or change the air pressures. All they did was make a phone call. I think I, and all others that consider this to be a flaw, deserve better.

This is the post I found discussing problems with the manual transmission used with the Camaro V6. It doesn't say anything about a constraint, but there was definately a problem. Possibly not enough testing was done using the newer parts?

Check out the G8 GT forum. They had the same issue about a year ago and it turned out the universal joint was not aligned properly. I think Pontiac issued a TSB on it.
Also had some Wheel Bearing problems associated with the sound. Last edited by zen; 11-01-2009 at 01:03 PM. |

I know the first-gen Cadillac CTS had a harmonic noise problem with their rear differentials. Wonder if it carried over into the Camaro.

Much reduced Harmonic Noise
I brought my car to the dealership this week and told them about the harmonic sound and slight vibration. Long story short -Three out four tires (L/F, L/R, R/R) were out of balance. They "road forced balanced" the three tires. They also checked to see if the rims were true. I was told that normal balancing may not sufficiently work with these type of tires. Anyway this morning I took the car on the interstate and the low frequency harmonic noise is almost eliminated and no vibration. Harmonically, there is still something there (very low frequency - 100Hz?), it is minimal, but it may just be the tires. I only drove the car 10 miles at highway speeds (60-70mph). On the way home tonight, the highway has just been paved and the sound may be more noticable. I'll keep you posted - could be that placebo effect!
Camdaddy - I would suggest that the dealership 'Road Force Balance" the tires. |

The day after I got my car it was only 38-40 degrees and I did go on the freeway and had a really weird vibration noise as well it was loud inside the car almost reminded me of my ears being plugged up. when I got off the freeway it went away so I called my friend and she told me it sounded like the tires. Since then the weather has warmed up and I have put 400 miles and have not heard that noise again. I guess the tires when cold turn harder and can create a noise on different types of pavement etc..

Well on my way home last night the that low frequency harmonic sound it still there between 60-70 mph. There is no more vibration / oscillation of the harmonic, now it's more like a drone. So the "road force balancing" did something. I will probably make another appointment next week to bring it back to the dealship, this time request to have a tech ride with me. It's funny how I did not notice it yesterday morning going to work, I do not think it is road related because the surface of the highway is varied in both directions. Keep you posted.

My dealer didn't do any rebalance of the tires because there actually is no vibration, only the drone. |
