My in-laws have determined that regardless of the fertilizer and water you toss at a Pecan tree, they do their own damned thing....

We had a harvest a few years ago where every tree was dropping hundreds of pounds of premium pecans, and this was orchard wide.... The following year they, the trees, decided to heck with this and took the year off..... Then there was a very light harvest, and another light harvest... This year is yet to be determined.... And this after half the trees in the back orchard were removed to allow for horizontal growth and improved sun penetration.... Who knows....

They stopped spending a fortune on fertilizers, though they still spray pest control to keep the worms and other bugs away.... They have about 8 different varieties of pecans... Some of them are buttery soft and flavorful... Others are, well, pecans...

Oh, and for the record.... Covid sucks and I really do wish Phauci a long long stay in purgatory...

Third time I've had it, first two times I got it from my wife who had her shots as required by her former employer, and this time from my sister in law and her husband... Family dinner out and I sat across from her... The next day she has a scratchy throat and progresses downhill from there... A few days later I developed the scratchy throat, and we home tested.... Yup, i got it again... Called my doc and he immediately ordered me onto Paxlovid due to my history... Deb got the scratchy throat the day after me, and she tested positive the day after me, Doc wouldn't call her a script for Paxlovid as she is considered low risk...

I suffered it quite a bit worse than Deb, but we both motored through.... I finally got my sense of taste back... though we are both very low energy and bouts of mild nausea.... I'm 11 days into this crap....

Fornikate Fauci....

Welcome back Wayne. Good to see ya brother!
Thanks Guys, I am better and more importantly, my bride is better.... COVID didn't hit her as bad as me, but she had a rough go with a rebound secondary infection.... I can state however, we are both kicking and screaming....

I actually went to my old haunt, Kerrville Texas today, to have lunch with one of my former Lieutenants, from the fire dept, and after that, I spent the rest of the afternoon at Fire Admin, going through old pictures and documents. I'm doing the required research for an attempt at writing a book....The Chief has rolled out the red carpet...

When I have what I need from there, hopefully over the next few weeks, I'll then be given unfettered access to the local newspaper archives to look for articles based on the days I was on duty.. To jog my memory... I will not write from articles, but if they allow me to remember things I care to share, I'll move forward....

Dad would say the only way to plant a pecan tree is to plant a native pecan... I think he was right, although a brother did have good luck with transplants but had to nurse them.

Bikes, books, and barfing, you've been busy!

That's a good looking bike, and Indian is a great choice. Does momma like to ride? As for the book, make a chapter called, "You ain't gonna believe this $#!^" I'll buy that book! Glad you're feeling fine, the earth is a more interesting place with you in it.

How bout, "hold mah beer...."

The ride back and forth to Kerrpatch will be a lot more enjoyable... I wasn't looking forward to being stuck looking out the window.... That aint for all of us... Nuttin wrong with it.... Just different.... I can put a laptop in one bag, along with some other stuff, and my camera in the other bag....

Speakin of busy.... Damn man, I been forcibly retired for a while now, but my wife just pulled the trigger after 34 years at the University... Damn the paperwork hoops we been jumping through...

Medicare Part B, proof of prior coverage for medical... oh and now for pharmaceuticals... or I have to pay a lifetime (mine) penalty.... Damned Gubment.... Tax the hell out of my SS/Disability... Plus we had to find an agent to set up my supplemental coverage, now that I'm not on the bride units insurance... She'll COBRA her coverage for a few years... Until she's forced to jump ship.... Plus all the retirement accounts we found from my various jobs... That is actually a small blessing... The last one, that I haven't pulled yet is going to take us on several vacations... The first about two weeks in Jamaica.... The rest were used to pay off my tractor....

The mountains of paperwork, and them forcing us elderly tech challenged folks to do most everything by computer, and oh no, we cant email the documents in, we have to have most of them notarized and then "FAX" them in... Buttholes... Who uses FAX anymore... We don't even have a land line in our house.... But they can email the docs to us...

There is so much more we've been chasing... Oh well....

Oh, and what is a native tree....

Most of them in the orchard are Indian name varieties... Choctaw, Cheyenne, Pawnee, Wichita, Mohawk, etc.... It's like land reparations, who do you consider to be the originals.....

(this is 50 yr old info) I was told any papershell pecan, when you plant it, will revert back to the native tree it was grafted to. Many of the varieties are grafted to a local native species for hardiness, you get the old hardy base with modern papershell fruit. If it's a small pecan, it's likely native, if it's a large papershell fruit it's hybrid. I've never seen a papershell growing in a creek tree line. I'm no horticulturist so you'll hafta google the natives species name, till then we'll call them 'creeks'

If/when it is published, you my friend, will get a signed copy… The publisher at the news paper I need access to for research is no longer affiliated with them, after he offered me access… So I just reached out to the interim… Fingers crossed…

My in laws have 6 or 8 different varieties, all named after Indian tribes… All I know is they are good eat’ in…

Congrats on the spousal units retirement. I don't think there is enough space here to explain the craziness with starting Sue's Medicare. Lifelong penalties and she's been on my Military Tricare and still is for secondary but that doesn't qualify as an employer insurance for some reason. Then they randomly back date part A 6 months so no part B coverage during that time when she had Tricare that now denies coverage because Part A was in effect. Getting that date fixed has been futile so far. Then have to pay extra due to income as well. Quite sure if I was an illegal immigrant this would be much easier.

Good luck and tell Debbie congratulations

So, it appears the Interim Publisher, (who isn't "taking" the job and is retiring in a month or so), has given me the royal runaround, and thus, I will continue pursuing the information I can. The good news is, they (the fire department) have found the daily logs for all of the years I need to reference. I have already been through the 1984 Central Station Log.... I have a lot of dates and addresses from that year, as well as the chronological order of specific events... within reason....

This "interim" told me about newspaper archive . com, which is a pay service. I'll sign up for it for a month and see how complete it is, if they even have anything I need.

I was informed by another source, the paper gave thousand of micro-fiche plates to guy with a print shop, former mayor owns it... I may reach out to him, as well if they have storage facilities for that much, the Library or the Historical Preservation Society may have printed copies of the papers... Time will tell.... and I have a lunch date with my old training officer.... He has some info for me...

I also received some images from one of my lieutenants who has a scrap book....

In the first image, I'm the young skinny dude performing compressions on a dude who wrecked a big panel van. This was in 1985 I believe, so I was 23 at the time.... The Lieutenant that provided me this image is the guy holding the light box behind me... I started in Kerrville as an FF / EMT, and this was at the time there was no requirement for having any medical certification, but it was in process. We eventually took over EMS from the private provider and had a very progressive and aggressive EMS system...

This image is of those of us that went out in the swollen flood waters of the Guadalupe River when the bus and van were washed off with the loss of 10 lives. We actually saved two teens and the bus drivers wife...

This was in a river section that is normally 10-15 feet wide at the low water crossing, and as we entered the waters in a raft, it was over a mile wide and moving roughly 60 mph in the middle. We worked our way from tree clump to tree clump, as the people escaping the bus and the van were seeking sanctuary in the trees, as were snakes and balls of fire ants. Some of you may have seen news videos of the Army helicopters with perpetrators and PJ's picking kids from trees. There was a news chopper (KENS-TV Chopper 5) pressed into service as well. Mike Rice, the pilot of Chopper 5 said he would work with us in Kerrville anytime anywhere... He came up and attended and assisted with training classes we had for swift water scenarios... He brought the chopper and a camera man and made news stories out of our training classes. We were instrumental in bringing "Rescue 3" (a company out of Sonoma California owned by Jim Segerstrom) to Texas for Swift Water Rescue 1, 2 and Instructor... A number of us taught the initial classes offered in Texas.
We were nominated for the Benjamin Franklin Award for Heroism; though we didn't win the awards, to be nominated is more than enough.... Several million Firefighters in the US and Canada, and there are roughly 10-15 nominations a year... so.... I'm the one shaking hands with the Mayor
