Tips on a making exhaust a little more quiet
Hey all,
I have kooks long tubes with a borla atak cat back. The car is cammed which I know doesn't help with the sound. Anyways, I was wondering what would be the best option to quiet it down some. Would you add resonators? a new axle back? I was looking for another option before switching the cat back out, but if I have to, I will. Thank you!

You could try exhaust baffle like this. I've used similar ones with my bikes and cars. They're designed to go at the end of the headers, but I've placed them at the start of the mid pipe and at the beginning of cat backs, and they still work well.

Do you have cats, or straight headers to catback? If no cats, that can also help a bit.

Intersting. I've got LT's and high flow cats with stock mufflers. Still stock motor and have been considering Borla Atak axle back with my setup, but have been debating whether it'd be too loud.
In your case, the cam is likely really cranking it up. You would likely be best with stock NPP's behind your LT's. |

I went from Pic #1 to Pic #2. And back again....
I have LT's, No Cats, Borla Atak, Whipple and a Blower Cam. It was WAY too loud, and had back rap like Shot gun Blasts. Too much for a regular street driven car. The MF Muffler really addressed the volume overkill and Back Rap, but almost too quiet as I wanted it loud but not obnoxious. Since the car is really not a DD, and more of a car show type of car, I removed the M-Flow and went back to the Atak Crossover, and the use of Slip Clamps made this easy. Best option is to add louvered glass packs, if you wanna keep your straight-through mufflers on the axleback section. Resonators help a bit, but they don’t do nearly as much with their perforations versus the louvers in glasspacks (or resonators that have them).
I guess you could buy like 20”+ inch long resonators, but that would just be adding extra weight, while you could buy louvered glasspacks that are as long or shorter, and they do more of a job to quiet the volume, and also kill rasp and drone. Metal chambered mufflers like Flowmaster will do more if they’re a full size muffler; but single chambered smaller mufflers like the Super 10, will make your exhaust drone and be raspy, especially with a cat delete or long tubes. The x-pipe muffler like the one Magnaflow offers, is also a good alternative. That’s pretty much what MBRP and some other companies did with a mid muffler, although they basically left the rest of the axleback as a muffler delete or with straight-through “mufflers” that barely do much. I used to have a Solo Mach X catback exhaust system, which is pretty much what I mentioned; with it having a full-sized mid muffler (not sure of the internal design), and muffler deletes with j-pipes on the axleback section. I currently have a Borla Touring catback, which pretty much comprises of “full-sized” rear mufflers, which are fiberglass packed and are a straight-through design. The mid pipes that come with it, are pretty much non-resonated, with a single x-pipe. It does a fair job of quieting down volume, drone, and rasp. I don’t see the need for a mid muffler if I had a full axleback like this, but I could see myself adding maybe some smaller resonators, to kill the rasp and smooth the overall tone if I’m running long tube headers or cat deletes. |

My original Combo was LT's, no Cats, and a Borla Atak on a stock engine, that sounded great. It was "loud" but not obnoxious on a street car. When I installed the Whipple and Blower Cam, it was a significant difference as anything off idle and part throttle was really loud - bordering absurd. But I liked that as the car see's very limited driving, like car shows and occasional rip. I had the car re-tuned by Jannetty and he was able to tune out the back rap which is prob the most annoying aspect of a loud exhaust. |
