V6 Transmission install
Swapped out the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and slave cylinder/throwought bearing. I am REALLY struggling to get this transmission to go back into its home. I can get it to line up on the bottom but the top refuses to marry up to the engine. Any tips or tricks?

I realize I did not provide enough information. It’s a 2010 v6 6 speed manual.

Did you use a plastic alignment tool to line up your clutch? If you did they can have some slop so sometimes its a matter of unbolt and re-align the clutch until it slides in. You can buy a good quality metal stepped universal aligner that works much better but its kind of pricey for one time use. Transmission shops often use a cutoff input shaft from a junk transmission, that is the best.

I took the clutch off today and peered in and noticed the slight slop using the plastic tool. Re did everything and made sure to look at the alignment of it all before attempting the trans again. Noticeable difference however I still can’t get it to slide on the last half inch. All the bolt holes line up and I can even start threading them but I’ve been led to believe to never use the bolts when mounting the trans. Anybody else hear this?

I have found that making sure the transmission gap to the engine is consistent all the way around the bellhousing when sliding it forward helps a lot. if the gap is less at bottom for example the transmission at rear is too low, gap smaller on right side, transmission rear needs to go left.
Clutch alignment tool used, film of grease on input shaft splines and tip that goes into pilot bearing, transmission going in at angle to match engine angle. I have a v8 but assume it should be the same for yours. |

Just an update, I finally got it in. Bad news: I had to do it twice.
I took off the clutch and pressure plate and peered down the hole until everything was lined up with my eyeballs(kind of a feat with that little room to work with. My jack stands don’t go high enough for the trans to come out from under the car). After that everything went in relatively easily. Refilled fluids, bled clutch, bled brakes (since I was already there). Could never get the clutch to feel correct though. I noticed as I was putting the car in gear the wheels would instantly start spinning. Obviously that wasn’t correct. This led me to a different post on here with very similar symptoms to what I was experiencing. Bottom line, clutch was installed backwards. The manual that the both of us used used a word description rather than a graphical depiction that leads you to putting it in backwards. The description they used seemed to conflict with videos online on which side of the clutch faces the transmission. So I had the wonderful experience and learning opportunity to do it all again. In the end I got it all good and now everything is back to normal. Biggest takeaway: don’t single source your information for tackling a project like this. I was using the manuals from “operation CHARM” online and for the most part they do a great job. Had I more seriously considered multiple sources of information I may have been able to save myself some heartache and general body aches. Hopefully this will potentially help somebody in the future, especially because there is no such thing as a detailed write up for how to tackle this project for our (V6 MT) cars.
