Agreed, but 49,000 only applies to EVs. Most of the Chinese brands that are more aggressive on the export front also produce HEV and PHEV. They used this exact leverage in the EU when EU imposed tariffs and/or volume limits on EVs. Companies like BYD, Geely, Xiaomi, JAC, and SAIC (MG) are already exporting all of these propulsion types to Mexico and have grabbed a significant share of the market. These same companies are also actively looking for manufacturing locations in Mexico, Canada, and even the US.

Sales numbers don’t equate to whether something is nice or not.

Chinese stuff is cheap.

I’d still buy Toyota or Honda over Chinese crap. But really want my 6.2 Tahoe.

Just ain’t payin what GM thinks they can charge.

China is the only one that has an EV if I read correctly that can fully charge in 5 min. If it is indeed at the right price it could even disrupt Honda Civic sales. That time to charge takes away a barrier of entry.

Apparently you haven't seen a Chinese ev. I don't like ev's and won't own one regardless of brand, however stuff that BYD and Xiaomi in particular are putting out are superior in quality and workmanship than any of the ev's Toyota, Honda, Tesla, or the big three put out. There are reasons they are selling like hot cakes and it isn't because of price. Remember, because of tariffs, Chinese ev's are the same price and sometimes more than the competition.

Teslas are built like absolute garbage. Their plastic is 1990s GM level. Squeaky when you press it, poor fitting, rattle boxes waiting to happen.

Door gaps are nowhere near Toyota and Honda levels. Even current GM.

Um, are you really going to call something crap and then say you want a 6.2 Tahoe? Have you been living under a rock? The 6.2 L87 is the literal definition of crap. The 6.2 in your Camaro ain't safe either. They have been blowing up as well, just not enough to cause a stir since less LT1's are made then L87's. Same exact bottom end on both engines. On the FB pages which have a lot more action than these forums, there are many reports of LT1's blowing up with pictures showing the cranks literally cracking like they are on the L87's.

I don't think there is a mainstream car company out right now putting out more crap than GM aside from maybe Toyota since they also forgot how to make an engine (referring to the Tundra TTV6 fiasco that's still going on).

Ever actually been in one or are you just parroting what you hear on the internet? I've had one in my garage for the past two and a half years. It's my wife's car but I drive it a good share of the time. No build problems with this one. Not a single warranty issue in 2-1/2 years. Only maintenance in that time is a bottle of washer fluid, tire rotation and replacing a tire that was obliterated by a road hazard.

That is true. But it does not exclude hybrids and PHEVs. Technically speaking, those can be imported right now. If companies like BYD, SAIC, Chery, Xiaomi et cetera import a broader product portfolio, only the EVs count against the 49,000 vehicle allowance. It also sets the field for ability to build vehicles in Canada. This is something that the Chinese brands have been looking at over the past year or two.

Yes I have sat in enough at car shows and played and pressed around the materials to know they’re junk,

They are garbage.

It does not surprise me one bit though.

Early on they were. I even recall seeing a Model X in an airport parking lot with a vanity plate PANLGAP. I almost busted a gut. But I will say that over the past 3 - 4 years, after building several million units, they've vastly improved their build quality. They're not the best, but they're nowhere near the worst. We wouldn't have taken delivery if it was not up to par.

Well considering your Prez is going to tear up the renegotiated NAFTA/USMCA deal he so loudly proclaimed as a huge win during his first term he is almost pushing our lefty government to do that.

Hate to break it to you but Chinese cars are far better quality and much better designed than the (admittedly limited) selection of US vehicles we get here.

They dont sell more because they are cheap, they sell more because they are better in nearly every respect, in fact they are better than a lot of European stuff too.

Dont understand why folks feel the need to speak like an authority without actually having any experience, exactly how many EV's or Chinese cars have you driven?

So you're Niagara Falls, Ontario, not Niagara Falls, NY. Cool. Buffalo native here.
