Today I scanned the center console to begin CAD work on the hydro handbrake bracket.
Work on the rear dual caliper mount is mostly complete. |

I'm using the Creality Ferret. It's been fine for the small brackets I'm making, but the interior scan revealed a lot of weaknesses with the scanner.
The rear knuckle turned out great, but the dimensional accuracy between the two center console scans is not good. The shifter and handbrake are definitely in different spots between the two scans I've made. For what I'm doing, that's fine, I only need a general idea of the clearances here, but I'm definitely looking to upgrade. That said, I got this scanner for $200 and I've been able to do an astonishing amount with it. |

One piece of hardware that allows for more advanced drifting techniques is a hydraulic handbrake, a dedicated master cylinder that only acts upon the rear brakes. Exact opposite of a line lock. Useful for easily inducing oversteer and other maneuvers when sliding around. The original handbrake can be used for much the same purpose, though I find it is positioned poorly in-cabin for use while driving, and of course the cable-actuated parking drum is less suitable for repeatedly locking up the rear wheels than a hydraulic caliper. To do this, I need a dedicated master cylinder in-car attached to a big lever handbrake. I'm making a bracket that will mount the handbrake on the opposite side of the tunnel from the factory cable handbrake. To aid my reverse engineering, I'm using a 3D scanner, which uses RADAR/LIDAR/other optical scanning technologies to create a 'cloud' of points in the shape of whatever the user intends to capture. On the interior, I scanned the transmission tunnel both with and without the center console installed. I then overlaid both of these scans on top of each other in CAD, using the gear shifter and parking lever to accurately position one to the other. The tunnel scan without the console captures the mounting points I plan to use: the studs that hold in the yaw sensor module and the SRS ECM. The center console scan allows me to verify that whatever bracket I create will not terribly destroy the useful surfaces of the trim (cupholders) and confirm that the resulting handbrake lever placement is ergonomic in relation to the steering wheel and shifter. I have a Wilwood unit on order that I will be test fitting soon using a 3D-printed prototype of the bracket before ordering the final pieces in laser-cut steel. I also used the 3D scanner to capture a complete rear suspension knuckle in a point cloud mesh. It is possible to use a hydraulic handbrake in-line with the factory calipers, again much like a line-lock, but there is some added control and consistency to be gained from mounting a dedicated caliper on the rear rotor that is exclusively operated by the handbrake. The bracket shown bolts through two of the wheel hub mounting holes, creating pickup points for a Wilwood Dynalite 4-piston caliper. The huge rear rotor on the Camaro slightly pushes over the max rotor size for these calipers, but prototype brackets show clearance is acceptable. I initially planned this bracket to be made from plate steel as well, but clearance to the CV axle made this difficult. I will instead create this part from 3D-printed aluminum. Here's a screenshot of the current bracket design for the handbrake. I don't like this bracket for several reasons and will be starting over this weekend. |

Finally got around to ordering my custom floor mats for Miss Ruby! I've been looking at them for about a year now. One of my friends has a 2015 1LE in red and black, and he beat me to the punch, and man do they look great in his Camaro!!
