6l80E Transmission fluid and filter service
Dropping the pan and changing filter this weekend, car has 70k on it and it’ll be the first service. I know, should have done it sooner.
I have 8 quarts of Merc 6 synthetic valvoline synthetic on the shelf. How many quarts do you guys typically put back in for a pan drop service? On my Duramax I have to get the fluid up to *170 and open the fluid level plug till it trickles out. Just asking to see if there’s a hard number for how many quarts go back in or if there’s a specific way of going about it. I tried to search here and YouTube but nothing concrete and most procedures I found were being done on trucks. Thank you 🙏 |

you can buy the jennetty trans dip stick, then you won't have to guess.
The 6L80 transmission has a total dry capacity of about 11-12 quarts, but a standard pan drop and filter change requires around 6-7 quarts, while a full overhaul can take up to 10-12 quarts

Not sure why no one's mentioning it, but if you still have the OEM trans pan, there's just a leveling plug (which people mistaken as a drain plug). You can technically "drain" through that plug, but it won't get all the fluid out, of course.
I ended up swapping many aftermarket pans, and those come with both the leveling and main drain plugs. And yes, it would be nice to get the dipstick, as you don't have to guess/estimate the fluid level, and you can also physically check the quality/condition of the trans fluid. |

I'm no master mechanic but I believe that would be the crankcase, not tranny!
