[QUOTE=OUR72GTO;1146255]The engine will crank ( spreading oil and pressurizing the system ) but the engine will not fire when the DIC says hood open.
Then, if the car needs a jump start.....

If you like driving in nice weather and getting to enjoy you cars almost all year round, move to CA! That is of course if you won't mind the quakes, arrogant drivers, expensive cost of living, tree hugging, and smog.

I just did the first oil change on my 1LT/RS over the weekend and I was able to start up and move my car a few feet with the hood open and I'm pretty positive the DIC said "hood open".

Not good idea with more modern cars with closed crankcase/PCV systems. As the engine warms/cools any condensation/moisture that occurs inside the crankcase will tend to be trapped and build up in the oil if it only sits idling since the PCV valve is almost closed at idle. Only during accelaration/load and low vacuum does the valve open to circulate crankcase gases through the combustion chambers and burn off any moisture. So if you aren't going to drive it for a while at full operating temperatures, starting it and letting it sit idling will do more harm than good. When I store mine I put some nice fresh clean oil in it at leave it at that. Once or twice I may go out and bump the starter a little so it doesn't sit with the same intake/exhaust valves open all winter, but if I'm not going to drive it I don't start it. I also cover the intake and exhaust pipes to keep moisture and so forth out.

I plan to put her away for the winter...probably won't do much but throw some stabilizer in the gas and charge the battery every couple of weeks. Oh, and put a car cover on her. That's about it.... it works for the vette just fine...

I started my car with the hood open yesterday -- in fact every time I change my oil I start it with the hood open.
I know several people that take Spring wake-up as an opportunity to pull the spark plugs to check the gap and clean them. If all of the spark plugs are out, your motor will turn over with the starter, stress-free (no stress even from compression). A few others that I know use a little fogging oil when they are going to let their car sit for a while. .

I have a few questions about the battery tender. Do you leave the battery in the car and connect the battery tender? How do you run the extension cord to the battery tender, leave the trunk open a bit?
