I do believe the saying is something like "go big, or go home". I think it applies here.

Big block? The LS3/L99 are small blocks. Anyways, glad to hear you are going with a SS!

Depends on how textbook you want to be....In my book any thing Gen 3 or 4 is a "small block GM", While Gen 1 and 2 were true "Small block Chevy's" in the true sense.

Just my 2 cents.

The original Chevrolet-designed small-block is a specific family of engines manufactured originally in 1955 and installed as production powerplants by GM for 48 years.
Subsequent GM small block V-8 engine designs built on different blocks are often confused with the original small-block. The big vs small block was a comparison of the external block dimensions as well as the internals sizes. Gen 1 and Gen 2's were the true big and small block engines. Stroking a motor to a given cubic inch has no bearing on whether it is a big or small block. Big blocks were originally designed as the engines for the trucks and bigger cars on the Chevrolet drawing boards at the time. The external/internal block dimensions are how it is possible to have a 400 small block and a 396 big block. Stroking can change the cubic inch displacement, but does not affect the classification.

Gen III Gen IV, The LS series engines are a clean sheet design with little in common with the classic Chevy Small Block/Big Block. They were designed for rear wheel drive GM vehicles... ie, trucks, Vettes, a few Caddy's, and now the Pontiac G8 and Camaros. These were a GM standard for all GM brands, and were all aluminum for cars and cast iron blocks with aluminum heads for trucks.
The titles big and small block are a holdover but these are completely new design engines.

Back in the day, each division of GM built their own engines. A buick 350, a olds 350, a chevy 350 and a pontiac 350 were not in any form or fashion the same engines other than CI displacement. Pontiac, Chevy and Buick 350's were termed small blocks but the Olds 350 was a big block. Again, refer to casting dimensions. Olds engines from around 340 to 455 were the same external dimension. Chevys were from 265 or so to 400, ci small blocks and 396 to 454 ci big blocks. Yes you can buy upwards of 600 cubic inch engines. (Strokers) over or under square depending on the application desired...

A nickles' worth...

The stock exhaust is pretty quiet. I think they did that so Camaro owners can have a bit more fun and not tip off those ole' policemen....lol

I sort of opened a can of worms here "big block" obviously the LS 3 isnt a big block, but certainly the big brother to the 3.6 .
It sure does put things in a new perspective going forward...I think its going to increase the grin factor...but maybe not at the gas pump...but as the ol saying goes " ya wanna dance,ya gotta pay the fiddler "
