Out of curiosity, talked to a friend who is a car painter and he said closer to $3500 (at least from him) for an OEM paint and finish (clear coat and all that jaz). Now whether the color is due-able...who knows. Just food for thought, but you can re-paint a Camaro for cheaper than $5000!

The OP's location is the kicker. Florida (and other warmer states) are selling a lot more than the northern states. They have "fewer" cars on the lot to sell, so they still think it's ok to mark up over MSRP because they feel they are still rare.

I ordered that same car less the RS package in May delivered in late August and paid about 1500 under the sticker price. I did shop around as some dealers didn't want to come down on price. I figure let someone else pay the premium. eventually the dealers will stop. Interesting quote out there " you can shear a sheep many times but only skin it once" dealers charging a premium won't have many returning customers.

Its stories like this that make you lose sympathy for all the dealers that went under in the current financial mess. I mean, think of all the MILLIONS of people theyve boned for decades. It sucks that its 2009 and the way we buy cars today is the same as it was 50 yrs ago. Hopefully w/ the internet its harder for these guys to screw you out of your hard earned money.
In fairness though, almost every dealer I shopped at were selling at MSRP, though they all had the exact same line : "Unlike all the other dealers, we're not selling above MSRP". You gotta love these guys. |

We have dealerships bying Camaros from the auto auction and putting $2500+ over MSRP stickers on cars. This is why I was heading up north to Rodgers Chevrolet to get my Camaro. Sean

Dealer buy cars @ auction for two reasons. 1. If they have no allocation. 2. It's a hot car that will sell. Don't blame the dealer in that instance. The dealer isn't making all that much profit if they are buying a Camaro @ auction, and selling it for as much as $2,500 over the original MSRP. If the dealer buys the car at auction, they are not paying the original invoice amount they would normally pay to GM. They buy @ a little over MSRP. In those cases they HAVE TO mark the car to make any money at all, yes? Blame the dealer that has an available Camaro that they paid invoice for from the factory, and STILL want $2,500 over MSRP.

Some dealers are even selling at invoice now (below MSRP) plus discounts! Don't pay any premiums. I hope someone from GM (executive level) tracks these scamming dealers and takes there allocations away.

Doesn't really matter what the reasoning is, the customer is still getting screwed by any price over GM's MSRP. This is made true by the fact that many dealers listed here on the forum sell at or below MSRP, a dealer that makes up the "rare" or "hott car" excuse is just going to lose business plain and simple.

How is the customer "getting screwed" in that case? It isn't like the dealer is making a lot of money on the deal. If the dealer is paying $1,000 over MSRP for a car instead of invoice, then charges $2,500 over, said dealer is only making $1,500. That's too much $ for the dealer to make? That's about what the dealer is making on most cars that they buy from GM. Wow, who knew that it's a crime to make money. Like I said, in that instance there is nothing wrong w/ that. If the dealer is charging $2,500 over on a car that they paid inv for, sure.
