There isn't anything that you've pointed out that isn't applicable to Z28, minues the actual years. And, for the record, the SS in the 4th. Gen. was rated the highest, but didn't make much, if anything more, than the Z28. The biggest performance differences were the catbacks, which were only marginally bigger, but had the same muffler (if I'm not mistaken) and a little different suspension tuning. I'm not counting SLP cars that came with their catbacks and at the end of the '02 run, their Blackwing air lids, simply because I don't really consider them factory GM cars. There were no quicker.

I believe Z28s had just as much an impact in Trans Am racing as SSs did on the 1320. I don't think SSs ran contigulously from '61 through now anyways.

"Super Sport, or SS, is an option package offered by Chevrolet on many of its vehicle lines since 1961. Some of the better-known models to bear the SS badge include the Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, Impala, and Nova. Originally introduced in 1961 as an appearance package for the Impala, it became a high-performance package in 1966. - That was wikipedia'd

I'd have to do a lot more research to see if SS did truly run for the years you've suggested and whether or not it was actually for longer than Z28 was used, but I don't think it's that important at this point. My point is the Z28 has just as impressive history as SS

Actually...as far as the Impala is concerned at least, the SS (SS427)became a separate model for model year 1967 through 1969 and it included performance items.I have a 1966 Impala SS and it was still mostly an appearance package then.

Who, Box'?
I think I may have gotten this thread mixed up with another on where i posted about he history of the Z28 compared to the SS, and if i did i am sorry... Hard to remember what you posted and where at my age...LOL

You may have misinterpreted what I said, Because the SS has been around not only longer,by longer i didn't mean how many years it was produced but it was the first performance line of Chevys. The Z28 was a very good performer for ONE car line and only ONE car line.
By the way I stated the ss package was an appearance package(On Malibus and Novas) to promote a sporting image, and could even be had with a 6 cyl. engine. MOST SS cars were ordered with higher performance equipment for Drag racing (the 61 you could get a 348 or 409 Big block in it) and street racing... as it's reputation Grew for high performance then we got such legends as the SS396 Chevelles, Camaros and Novas, The SS 427 Impalas, The SS454 Chevelles..

While the Z28 stuck with the small block 302 or 350 engine it's entire life.
Actually the Camaro Z28 was only truly sucessful in Trans-am racing from 1967-1969, only because of Roger Penske and Mark Donohue. After that when Penske Switched to AMC the Camaro slowly faded from the Trans-Am scene... so I think that the many years of success of the SS line overhadows the 3 successful years that the Camaro had in Trans-am racing.

If you Want to just stick to the Camaro line, I think if you will check I believe in every year that the Z28 and Camaro SS co-exisited the SS always had the bigger engine or highest HP available for that year.

Quote:
From Muscle Car Magazine
1961 would be the year that the first true muscle car was introduced, the Chevrolet Impala SS. This would also be the year that Chevrolet introduced its 409 cubic inch V8, the engine that would launch the Big Three auto manufacturers into the horsepower race that would last well into the 1970s. The 409 was actually a response to Ford's new 390 cid engine, which was outperforming Chevy's on the dragstrip. Although it put out "only" 360 bhp compared to Ford's top 375 bhp, those extra 19 cid gave it respect on the street and immortalized in song ("She's really fine, my 409"). Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport (SS) option package, which was optional on the 348 and standard with the 409, which would define Chevrolet performance for many years to come. The Super Sport package, a bargin at just $53.80, consisted of special body and interior trim, power steering, power brakes with sintered metallic linings, full wheel covers with a three blade spinner, a passenger grab bar, a console for the floor shift, and a tachometer on the steering column. The 409 engine came only with the four-speed manual transmission and only one factory axle ratio. Lower axle ratios were available from the dealer and owners could see 1/4 mile times in the high 15s, which was pretty impressive in 1961. Unfortunately, the 409 already came with 11.25 compression and a four barrel carburetor, and due to its wedge shaped combustion chambers was not very easy to improve performance further. But no matter. Although only 142 Impala SS 409s were built in 1961 (and most went to good customers that would run them at the local dragstrips), the legend was born and the horsepower race was on.
I hope you dont get all your car info through Wikipida.. LOL

This post is getting very long, so I left out details like years of production and engine availability but I can dig up that info from my vast archives of chevrolet info i have available ...

Yes the "Box" as you call him is my son...

by debatable I meant that the SS didn't always mean performance. . .Z28 did.
