the ford taurus I drove started doing this many months ago, we took it in to have it examined, the mechanic said it was the struts & that they may need replacing.
but upon inspection they said they're fine...for now.

Yeah I would diagnose it way differently on a FWD car.

werd, on a FWD car, id say its more likely to be a CV joint

ok good news! The torque arm that runs beside the drive shaft was not connect to the top of the transmission. The bolt fell out. That was causing it to hit the top of the transmission. I am so happy it was only that. It was very cheap to fix. Thanks for all the replys. \

Check the torque arm busing too. If it's the original one, depending on the previous owner and conditions the car was driven through, that rubber bushing maybe just bad. I've seen some to where there was no rubber in the bracket anymore and the torque arm was free to smack around under there.

Again, sorry for derailing the thread. I'm glad you got it fixed and I'm sorry I didn't have any suggestions for you. Glad it wasn't something awfully expensive to take care of.
