the ford taurus I drove started doing this many months ago, we took it in to have it examined, the mechanic said it was the struts & that they may need replacing.
but upon inspection they said they're fine...for now.

werd, on a FWD car, id say its more likely to be a CV joint

ok good news! The torque arm that runs beside the drive shaft was not connect to the top of the transmission. The bolt fell out. That was causing it to hit the top of the transmission. I am so happy it was only that. It was very cheap to fix. Thanks for all the replys. \
