Camaro SS / Brembo Brake 18" rim problem for winter tires
HEADS UP - Ordered tires and 18" rims for the winter from The Tire Rack but they have been informed of a "in production" brake pad change that may cause your 18" rims not to fit when you have to get new pads. Anyone else heard of this? Appears Brembo and Chev have made an on the fly change and now the new pads are larger and won't clear 18"rims! They were going to ship my tires but stopped until they figure out what is going on.

If you have an SS (20" wheels), then you might have a problem regardless, just trying to fit 18" wheels over the original Brembo calipers. Usually it's the size of the calipers that prevent the use of smaller wheels.
When I did the C5 brake upgrade on my '98 SS, I determined that if my car had the original 16" wheels that came on the Z28, they would not fit over the C5 calipers. The 17" SS wheels barely clear the C5 calipers, but the donut spare does not. Best regardSS, Elie

Hey garfin
![]() CTS-V? or still waiting? ![]() Brake pad thickness won't change the rotor placement. The rotors themselves have changed tho, I believe it has to do with the weights that used to be mounted on top... there's a thread about it around here someplace.

I can't tell if the weights are part of the pad backing plate or another part of the caliper assembly. In any event, the weights appear to protrude much further than the stick on weights do. This will certainly effect the usability of 18" wheels on an SS going forward. |

SS wheels 18" fits well
I bought these at tire rack and I have a lot of space for thicker pads even if the caliper moves out.
Bought these for 1450 with sensors! These are awesome in the snow. Firestone winterforce wheels msw type 12.

18 in. wheels fit no problem on the SS, maybe 3/8-1/2 in. of minimum clearance.

This same wheel did not fit my SS. The top of the caliper weights were rubbing against the inside of the barrel. |

Ouch! So, did you find out if there was a change in the spec for that caliper? It's a 3rd. party component, so there must have been a reason...which makes me wonder what the "problem" was with the first run. I don't experience squeaky brakes (not yet). Had to have been a pretty big issue.
It must be a Brembo issue. It would be very interesting to see what Tire Rack comes up with. It has to have been changed after a certain VIN date. EDIT: My VIN is 53xxx. I think we should poll the list to see when that change was initiated.

To play it safe I went with the 19" MSW Type 16 in black.
There was plenty of space between calaper and brake. But it was close between the Spokes and Brake Caliper. Had about 1/4-3/8" clearance. But that is enough |
