You should write a letter to Road and Track Magazine.

"One of our trio spotted a totally empty stretch of highway and briefly floored the Camaro SS, hitting an indicated 162 mph."

I would have done the same without a second thought. The Camaro SS is rock stable at 155mph (and extremely safe). If the section of road is safe and clear, its really no big deal.

I've never been on the Autobahn so I can't comment on that (safe, not safe?). But I do have friends that have. I'll have to ask them about how safe it is or isn't.

Diabel, I'm sure that you are aware that there is a slight difference between a 21st century car engineered to cope with over 400 hp and a suped up Malibu from the 1970's.

I've created a few amalgamated threads, but decided to separate how fast the V6 and V8 cars can go from how fast has they've gone. I see them as two distinct questions. One is limited by the car, the other by the driver's nerves, the law, and pavement in front of him.

I respect your opinion on speed, and am actually quite glad that there are people out there that feel the same way!

Me on the other hand, I am a complete speed junky. I have been racing since I was about 10 (Go-carts) and started racing cars when I was 17. When I do choose to speed I make sure that either it's legal, on a road course, drag strip or air strip. I will never forget my first time over 200mph (GPS numbers), I was 19 and driving a Lambo Diablo VT race car, absolutely insane.

Once more of these cars start getting to Europe I'm sure we will see more high speed numbers. But as said before, somehwere in between 170-180 is probably accurate

I got pulled over doing 152 in my 89 Turbo Trans Am. I've raced cars over 150 mph on many east coast tracks.

I haven't taken my Camaro over 90ish... I'm good with that, I'll take all your word for it.

Okay guys this is in km/h i got my car up to 260 on the analogue gague but then the limiter came in and it said on the little screen taht speed was limited to 236. did it again same thing. Analogue read 260 but digital said speed limited to 236.

Make what you want of it, but thats what happened. I doubt ill be seeing those speeds again!

Stock for stock I actually think my Camaro was more stable at those speeds compared to my 04 Z06. The Z06 is very "slippery" but has like zero downforce at those speeds! But now with all the mods on my Z06 (power and aero) it is so much better, 205mph on the GPS so far and still pulling

Having a relatively long wheelbase and wide track on the Camaro really helps out!

Yes.. I'm sorry, I was referring to the "older" cars hitting those speeds. I should have been more specific in that post. My malibu, and the 2nd gen camaro's, etc, were never meant to travel at those speeds without major modifications, case in point, my harwood fiberglass hood on the malibu actually bowed in causing stress cracks throughout the hood, and the elcamino spoiler under the front bumper also bowed in causing stress cracks and caused lift on the front of the car. The newer cars like this camaro are engineered, tested etc to handle the speeds better, which as I stated, it physically felt like the car was being pushed closer to the ground rather than lifting that I had experienced in my older cars... I had the camaro at that speed once, I really don't ever intend to do that again as I'd like to think i'm older now and a little calmer!!

Ok, I bought my 2SS in October. I found a nice straight away. and it was a clear sunny day. I did not go from zero and the grade was 0. I managed to get her up to 147mph and at that speed she was a little shakey. I had not realized I got up to that speed so fast and the shaky was more me nervous about hitting that speed. I still had plenty of room and was only at 2800rpm. After breaking her in good I decided to take another shot at it. This time I was the only person in the car, and I had emptied the trunk. found a 10 mile strech of road in the middle of nowhere and Let loose. It I was up to 60 very fast, and 100 shortly there after. From 100 to 125 was also fairly fast. I was running 92 octane with an octane booster and high performance tires. I kept on it until the limiter kicked in. I assume it was a limiter cause if I tried to go faster it would not let me and I was not red lined yet. I reached a top speed of 160 mph on my spedometer. My friend who is a cop tagged me at 159 mph. It seems there is a limiter at this speed. I think you may be able to, without any modifying of the engine and turning off the limiter, get to 170 mph at most. I was just under the red line.

Electronically limited at 155. I would estimate that my LS3 would do 165-175 max stock. It was still pulling pretty well in 5th when it hit 155.

Out at a gas station near the fest a guy swore to me it was 200+MPH.... Though I never mentioned who I was, I just let him go on as if he was teaching me something.

My face was like this

OK...I've got the LS3 engine and have reached 135 at the top of 4th gear..at which point my wife said to back it down..so with 5th & 6th to go, I'd say the skys the limit.
