Dad is thinking it's the torque converter...we shall see!
I had him drive it to work today...and what does he discover?! Transmission line spewing all over, too. Merry Christmas! LOL

Is this a 2.3 Liter Quad 4 motor by chance? I had a 96 that had the exact same problem. The fix was replacing the Ignition Module and Spark plug boots. This happened several times on mine and replacing the module and spark plug boots fixed the issue both times.

I'm think it's either the torque converter or the starter.
You say it only stalls or feels like it wants to stall when it comes to a stop correct? That sounds like a torque converter to me. And when you say that the lights seem to dim and go dark, that sounds like a starter. Good luck and keep us posted!! |

i had a grand prix that did that when the CPS failed. changed it out and no probs since... take it to autozone and let them scan your car...

More than likely its a vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum hoses and fittings on the intake manifold and associated stuff. The brakes are power operated on vacuum that would cause it to stall out on heavy braking if a hose is cracked or broken.

Sounds like TCC. Torque converter clutch solenoid. Common with what you are experiencing. Fixed many J and N cars for that. Yea, unplug it see what happens. Usually its hard to start when its real bad. I'm 99% on this one. You have to remove the trans side cover to access it. Easy fix.
