Apparently people are expecting me to get a ticket. I have had a few bets against me and I've screwed them all up by NOT getting tickets !

Is having a radar detector illegal? One of my buddies was telling me that you can have the radar in your car, unplugged, but if its on and the cop sees that its on, then you get a hefty fine or something along those lines, on top of what other ticket you're about to get. Any ideas if this is legit?

I got my Valentine 1 after I got my first ticket. None since and it has given me ample warning prior to line-of-sight location of the police officers.

I got pulled over after getting clocked on radar. The Officer approached my 2SS and ran my plate. I had my license and insurance card in my hand when he came up to my window. His first comments were " nice car, what's the horsepower, and how long have you had it". I told him 400 horsepower and had the car about 3 weeks. He asked me if I knew the speed limit and how fast I was going. I told him I thought the speed limit was 45 and that I was doing about 55. He told me the speed limit was 35 and that he clocked me at 60. He then said that since the car was so awsome looking and that I only had it for 3 weeks, he would let me go with a warning. Needless to say, I thanked him very much.

I'm getting one just before I get my car. You can get some decent NON GPS detectors for around $300, worth it if you go 10 over IMO.

not yet

Just got a detector for xmas, using in my truck over winter to see how it picks up, so far 110mph and no tickets. Got to love on ramps when no one is around. (its well over a 1/4 mile long)

For curves and hills, you need to drive with a vehicle in front of you by maybe 100yds or a little more. When that car gets hit by radar waves and you have a good enough radar detector, you will pickup the reflected radar waves. This is the only way to use a radar detector against an instant on radar. K and KA bands are the most widley used in the US and X is mostly outdated. Most states do not even have X band radars anymore. You have a better chance of not getting caught with a detector if you have a reflecting car in front of you no matter what kind of radar the Officer would have.
