Factory Alarm in 2010 Camaro SS rate it ?
OK guys before I know it my car will be here Sad to say my luck over the past 24 hours has been bad with theft so it leaves me wondering since I got a escort 9500ix radar detector for christmas. Is the Factory Alarm good enough to use or will I be better off buying a different/aftermarket one?
I know my car already has automatic start and probably wont have shock sensor since most factory alarms dont however when its set and you open the doors will it go off ? Any help would be Great if you know anything about this alarm Thanks |

I think it will be some time before these cars are "stealable", being able to simply break in is another method.

I would rate the factory alarm D- no shock sensor, no tilt sensor, no glass break sensor. I got a new alarm with that and more. If your in a car with a car theft problem upgrade as soon as u can.

Factory alarm score - I (for incomplete)
I tested the alarm by rolling down a window, locking doors with remote and then opening the driver door with the inside handle. The first time it did nothing, the alarm had not armed. To arm, the remote lock button must be pressed with the door open or pressed twice with door closed. The same test the second time around sounded the alarm with short-soft pulses of the horn. I would not call this attention getting. The factory remote start works great. I've used it to 200 feet with a clear view of the car, much less if operating through buildings. I doubt that an aftermarket remote start will work any better. As disappointing as the factory alarm is, I will not opt for an aftermarket alarm until someone makes a kit that doesn't require butchery of the wiring harnesses. I don't like the crimp lock wire taps they damage wire strands. Unfortately, this seems to be the normal method of installation. |

Three aftermarket things are necessary for safe keeping of a 5th gen.
1. Garage (This is a must. No exceptions.) 2. Take your iPod/Zune/TomTom/Garmin/Passport/etc. OUT of the car. It's not that hard, and you may be able to stash it somewhere out of sight in the car. Out of sight = Out of mind. Maybe in your pocket/purse, whatever is necessary. 3. Your common sense. Alarm systems are for personal attackers/assault/passive ATS. Seriously, why do you think you get a panic button on the FOB? It's not to scare the guy who's under the dash trying to hotwire the car, its for everyone else to see you are in danger. Peace of mind starts with proactive safety. |

There are much better alarms out there, I have a CompuStar on my 4Runner with a pager that has a range of a little over a mile. Factory alarms are about useless unless YOU are in range to hear it, as most people will ignore alarms anyway thanks to improperly set shock sensors (think the boy who cried wolf). If you are worried about it I would reccomend one that can notify you.

Unfortunately, I don't have my camaro yet, but the camaro should come with just a keyless entry, I would not consider keyless entry an alarm. Granted a keyless entry may provide a horn honk if something happens, but nothing to the extent of a 6 tone siren or full alarm system. Usually dealers try to sell an alarm to you during the checkout / final process. Thats how they make $$$$.

I agree with the low grades & Incomplete. I don't want my Baby broken into at all, or towed away...the alarm will do nothing in these cases. Mine is well protected, but, anything can be stolen...Wish I had her in a garage :(

All of the comments are correct. However there is stilla layer of defense that is embedded in the key itself. The fact that it is a laser cut key, and unique to only your car plus a proximity switch that is embedded in the remote.
Small consolation if it is towed away, but it is another layer of defense.
