Does car kill USB when off?

I have a ipod 3rd gen nano. It does not seem to go to sleep when I turn car off. I do not want it to stay running. It is connected only by USB. Any advice or help is much appreciated. I would like it to go on and off with the car.

...the USB provides power to the USB device when the car is turned off but once you open the door it cuts the power. Now, if you have your door open and than turn off the car than it cuts the power instantly.
