IL Automotive Laws
I will be moving to Chicago in December or January. I'm looking to get a head start on researching laws in IL when it comes to all aspects of owning my Camaro.
Help me compile facts here in this thread. We should post laws that will affect our driving experiences. These laws should include emissions, safety, speed limit, and other laws that will make owning a performance car a little more difficult.

What did you have in mind?
emissions - CAFE Sucks! Once you can see the sun in Beijing then we'll talk. safety - Good intentions, but makes cars too heavy speed limit - Too slow. Luckily, no one follows them anyways. Running 70 mph in a 55 zone near Chicago will get you run over. and other laws that will make owning a performance car a little more difficult - Welcome to Illinois, land of regulations |

I want specifics on emissions in Illinois. Having looked online, the Illinois EPA indicates that the test is OBD-only. To me, that says that I can tune my computer to dupe the testers. I want to know if this is the case or if I have to consider the possibility of keeping my cats in place.

We dont have any testing stations here for cars and since it is new you wont have a problem with it. If it is loud you might want to keep it down so as not to get pulled over for noise but that would be about it.

Been seeing on some other forums that that law has now changed to 35%. I still haven't got a conformation though.

Chicago cops are legit and dont really pay attention to petty traffic shit. Unless your a stereotypical gangsta or wangsta. They have real issues to worry about. Emissions are obd only and you can pass pretty much anything, as long as it isnt something entirely obvious, like a h/c motor dumped right after the headers.
As far as the highways, 90 and 290 ar 55mph limts but traffic is usually doing 70-80mph. Your good at that speed until you hit the suburb area. Tint is illegal (on sides, not sure on rear) 2 plates are required, but Ive never been pulled over or ticketed for it and Ive been driving with one plate for most of my driving career. The one thing they kill people for in Chicago and the suburbs is street racing or unsanctioned car gatherings....that 99% of the time lead to a race. Chicago bums are the best people in the world, I give them money every time I see one. They have great stories, just dont let them wash your windshield. Stay out of the southside, it smells like trash. If you see JJ Fish, your probably on a bad street. Its mandatory to go to at least 3 Blackhawks games this year, or they tax you $500 made payable to me. |

And just for confirmation, I will have no problem running long tube headers and high-flow cats; am I right? I'd hate to have to undo this for testing later.
