I quit reading after this post. You are EXACTLY right. Everytime this issue comes up, people come along and tell you not to drive like a nancy. Well, I live in a small town with stop lights, tractors, pedestrian...etc. I can't and won't drive like an "animal" (good word OP) all the time SO... I dont want my car to FORCE me into a gear that is going to lug the engine, or in this case, kill it. 1-4 at 15 MPH and low RPM?? Are you serious? The avoidance of GGT is awesome... now every M6 SS should come with the SSE in the glove box and a certificate for free install.

Skip Shift is unnecessary, awkward and potentially dangerous. I agree with you, not only should it be bypassed, GM should make it much easier to do so. I understand the politics behind the decision, but I don't understand why they didn't make the solution a simple fuse pull/replacement.
well said

Like it or lump it, choice between Guzzler Tax, and Skip Shift is not even a choice.

Now, if they don't need it to get past that, then there is no reason to have it. There could be a nice little "Training" thing that tells drivers they don't have to shift into every gear when casually accelerating.
Agree 100%.

Nobody is arguing the reason for it being there when the car is sold. The only point the OP is making is that it can be dangerous in certain circumstances, and because of that, it should have been designed with a simple and quick method to bypass.

Nobody can argue that disabling the Skip Shift makes the car more safe. That being the case, it should be something that can be done by the average consumer with minimal effort.

Personally, I feel that the Camaro is the best car for the money on the road today - and by a large margin over #2. But it isn't perfect in every little detail, as no car is. I want it to progressively get tweaked with each passing model year and this is one of those things that can easily be addressed.

You don't have to drive like an animal to gain 3-4 MPH to bypass skip-shift, nor will shifting 3-4 mph earlier save you enough gas to merit the random complaints about something that rarely shows up in the first place. Its not like the gearbox shifts you directly into 4th, you still have to move down,to the right, and down to get back into fourth. If said situation ever happened to me I would just go right back into first after realising im locked out of second.

Although I probably wouldn't try to shift on a steep hill in the first place.

OP: Glad you and the wife are okay, sorry the skip-shift is stupid and you hate it :(.

It's there. It sucks. It's been on Vettes for years. GM cannot offer a disable mode due to government regulations.

Get the eliminator kit, that includes a weather-proof plug for the open connector.

Sorry, I'm not going to fall for your clever trick. Everyone knows that you just described the "Poopality" (SS turns into a Mustang).

Doesn't the Vette have a fuse fix though?

The only time it gets me is at intersections when someone is in front of me. Typically it's when someone takes a little longer than usual to complete a turn and I have to ease up my previous pace. What's so awkward is that it's so counter-intuitive. If you're driving at lower than normal RPMs, the last thing you want to do is jump all the way to fourth.

Can the eliminator be installed by just putting the car up on a pair of short ramps (like for an oil change) - or is a full lift necessary?

I haven't read every single post in this thread, so I apologize ahead of time if I repeat anything that others have already said.

To the OP, I feel your pain, that sounds like a pretty bad situation. Honestly I think you should get an eliminator to avoid ever running into that situation again. Glad it didn't end up worse for you and your wife.

Having said that, this feature is there for a reason no matter how annoying it is. I suspect the reason they make it go from 1st to 4th is because that is the easiest transition. Though 3rd would be a better choice, you would have to fumble when the skip shift came in and blocked you out of 2nd but didn't slide right into 4th. I think that would cause as many if not more problems.

To everyone saying "are you going to say just mash on the gas" or "floor it" or "rev it to ridiculously high RPMs", no one is saying that. The skip shift activates between 14 and 19 mph (if I remember correctly) and at a certain throttle position (15-20% throttle or something like that). To deactivate it, you just need to accelerate over 19 mph, you don't need to "floor it" or "mash the gas", just don't shift or let up on the gas. Then it goes away. No offense to the OP, but when I'm on a "steep incline" I don't shift out of first at 15 mph (or so), I would like to get some speed to overcome gravity when going into 2nd because I know the car will slow down as soon as I push in the clutch. Also, not that it would have worked in this situation, but if it happens on level ground and you don't want to go into 4th, wait about 2 seconds and the gate opens again allowing for 2nd or 3rd. It's not that difficult.

I agree it's annoying, that's why I have the eliminator, but some people are putting words in others' mouth's and that's even more annoying.

I rev up to 3000 in each gear and have only seen the skip shift about 3 times in 4000 miles. ANd my area is EXTREMELY hilly.

Nope. Same exact thing. A plug in the tranny. Except on my vette (2007) it made the CEL come one. I guess there is a flash... never took it in. Ran for 2 years with the CEL on...

CEL -check engine light (someone will ask)

My wife would hang me by the giblets if I told her to just ignore a constant CEL. I'd need to apply the ol' electrical tape fix.
