recipe for 500rwhp cam only
Well in the spring I will have my SS and I like many of you want the famed 500rwhp. After spening countless hours surfing the net I believe I put together a proven recipe to be 500rwhp cam only meaning no other interal engine mods. We are going to be putting this same setup on a friends car sometime this month so I will post back with dyno numbers. First off you must have a m6 for this to work right as far as making the number but an auto will be find it will just read lower.
Lets start with the main component AKA the cam. When the Ls3 fist came out it was thought that you needed a wide split. Lately this has proven to be a internet myth. In surfing the net I have found tons of reasearch on corvetteforum.com not surprising seeing as how they have had this engine for 2 years now. For starters you need to call comp cams directly and order this cam, its not an off the shelf grind and therefor must be custom ground. Tell them these exact specs. 230 intake on a xfi lobe 612 lift 234 exhaust on a xer lobe 598 lift 114 lsa with 2 degrees advance so 114+2 Lsa For more reasearch on the above cam this thread is a very good read. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...right-now.html Also you will need the following Full exhaust, 1 7/8ths long tubes and catback. Btw texas speed has a great deal on the whole system A very good cold air intake, the vararam is looking promising. It wouldn't hurt to have your stock Ls3 manifold ported, fasterproms.net has a great program for this. Thats it along with a professional dyno tune this package should make 480-505 rwhp and 430-460 rwtrq. If anyone else trys it post up your numbers. Everyone has different opinion when it comes to things like this and cams. This cam is proven in the corvette world and has great drivibility, no bucking/surgeing and performs at the track and on the dyno. |

Theres a bunch of off the shelf cams out there that will get you 450-480 rwhp easy. Can't go wrong with custom grinds though. Your #'s look like a great steet cam with a nasty side. I'm a big believer in 114 LSA. Keeps it smooooth.

Yea there are lots of great cams out there and they get you to cetain place and all go about it different ways. This is what me and my friends are doing. Everyone isn't going to do what we do and thats good. Iam not looking to start a cam pissing match here. Just shareing stuff I have found and or learned. Thats it. Nothing more. So before this turns in a cam debate everyone know thats not my intention. I wish everyone the best of luck with their builds.

Dude - thanks for posting this data....I had read this cam about a month ago and could not find where I read it at.
You saved me some head scratch-en for sure! I was impressed on the results from a number of different people that had used this pattern. Now I just need to get up the courage to install one and accept the fact I will void my warranty! :(

You will have a hard time making anything near 500rwhp with this small cam in a Camaro. Making that power in a C6 is far easier.

It's not possible with the criteria noted. Pretty simple.
Unless you have a dyno operator that tweaks the correction factor to give you a *number* you want.

I'll agree 1000% with Ed.
I've spent enough time developing & testing camshafts for the LS3 engines. 500 honest rwhp with a cam only setup just isn't going to happen. Checkout our site, we have several camshafts with engine dyno data for you guys to look at. Custom grind camshafts are not always better. People like to say that, but most of the time people selecting the "custom grind" camshafts have very little experience with camshaft development & testing. After 100s of hours & several hundred dyno pulls testing LS3 camshafts I'd put our line of camshafts up against any of the supposed cam guru's grinds.... |
